One time and one time only, I hit just a tad over 17MPH. I don't scare easily but am not ashamed to say I was a bit unnerved at how the boat behaved at that speed. It was anything but "smooth sailing." I made up my mind then and there that in the future with those kind of gusts, I'd turn into the wind and furl the sail a bit. My personal experience has been that anything beyond about 10MPH requires quite a bit of attention and the leeward side Ama is going to be buried quite a ways below the water surface. |

No doubt high speeds can be hit momentarily Tom, but this guy's GPS claims he AVERAGED 12 MPH for over 18 minutes. I reckon I could do that if I put on a big enough outboard

has anyone come up with a good anti-diving plane for the bow of the TI yet? We sometimes find ourselves going downwind with 20 knots of wind and a couple feet of wave or more, and I know there have been times when I would have liked to keep that bow from submerging. A good design has to let it come back up without restriction, though. one version that I saw makes me nervous about it holding you under as well as it holds you up. if that makes any sense. |

Hobies said to be working on something. Till then, take a look at the Batboat thread. Maybe someone can improve on that deflector design. It does what you want. General comments: Longer Amas will help keep the AI nose up. And improve the ride. On the TI, hiking out and back are options for la Gringa. Or a quarter deck for you could elevate your status.  We've been discussing bow design and nose cones in other threats lately, but I mention sailing position because it can prevent many nosedives from starting. That and loading the boat with more weight aft. You might try furling more on downwind runs, or unlocking the cleat and working the sheets as you accelerate down the waves, to depower before the nose stuffs. Welcome back Gringo. Don't worry, I was nervous as well. Although it's not really designed as a anti-diving devise, all the tests so far have shown that with the amount of flex, it doesn't hinder the buoyancy of the nose at all. Yet to test at 20 knots downwind but gradually getting up there.  Good to have you back ! Where ya been ? |
