While I'm satisfied with my positive Ama retention device, here's another method for increasing the safety of the factory supplied Ama bungee system.

Below are the final photos of the positive retention hasp.

Tom,

Don't forget to exchange that hitch pin for a stainless steel one.

Actually, I've already replaced it with a SS S-hook attached to the hasp by kevlar cord.

Got to try it out this weekend for a bit. No slap, no movement.

It looks really slick, Tom. Very clean work.

Looks great Tom - and the ss hook and chord sounds like it finishes it off nicely 8)

On my AI one aka has the collar insert way into the ama...so what do you do on that one?

You would adhere some thickness of a slotted rubber or plastic washer onto the underside of the hasp device so that it would make contact with the collar. I'm guessing your collar is less than 1/4 inch below the top of the Ama.

Nice piece of craftsmanship Tom. It may be a good time to remind anyone thinking of undertaking the mod that nylock nuts are designed to be used once and should be thrown and replaced with a new one if they ever need to be removed. Not worth risking it for the sake of a few cents. Also never buy cheap Chinese manufactured nylocks. The nylon insert isn't UV stable.

While I'm up on my soap box, never buy Chinese anything for that matter.

That my good friend is good advice - but - at least here in the USA, is becoming more and more difficult.

Besides my AI, my other main distractions from real life involve my two classic Buicks - a '69 GS400 Convert I've owned for 20 years and a '68 Sportwagon 400. NEW parts for these that are not made in China are becoming increasingly difficult to source... even Moog suspension parts which were the premere replacements are now made of Chinesium

Nice cars, PW.

"Don't buy Chinese, etc." It sounds like a replay of what I used to hear about Japanese manufacturing. China is a fascinating country. Just keep an eye on the rear window, so you can see what is coming up.

The Aka collar on the AI sits very low in the Ama on the front. The thing to do would be to cut a short section of PVC pipe and split it so you have a collar "extension" that can be slipped on above the Aka collar. I'll make one tomorrow and take a photo of it. This will take up the small amount of space on the front of the AI Amas.

Makes sense Tom.
My front ama collar drops probably 4" into the Ama. I have to replace the collar anyway on one side as it has a crack in it, so will probably try making a few PVC "washers" and slip them over while I am replacing that collar.

Btw- copied your trolling motor mount, easy as pie, and works like a charm.

Take another look, the top of the collar should only be about 1/2 to 3/4 inch below the top of the Ama.

Glad the motor mount worked well for you.

Tom,

where can I get the UV treated plastic you are using? What thickness?
