Idaho gets a lot of back country hikers from Seattle, and they prepared a little advisory for folks new to hiking in bear country. They advise that you wear something like small brass bells, so you make noise and do not sneak up on them, as well as carrying pepper spray. They further instruct that you should be aware of what kind of bears are in the vicinity. This is best done by observing the scat or excrement. Black bears will have more evidence of berries, brown bears may have evidence of small mammals, the fur does not get digested. Grizzly bear scat will contain small brass bells, and smell like pepper spray.

Thanks again for the great tips Kieth - saw you post with the umbrella among other things down there in FLA. That might be crucial actually... I will have to look around to see if I can find a cheap on here in Blanding, UT. Not much here, but there is an ALCO. I'll drop you a line if I head NM way... I've traveled this country before so have been to some of the NP scenes you mention, this place is amazing... and I'd like to get back to Chaco Pueblo closer to you, so we'll see. The beauty of this journey is I can wing the whole thing. I didn't focus on doing a 9 day Powell trip, but when I got here started reading/hearing about Escalante River Valley, I felt it my duty to see this amazing country by water and take some time to make it happen.... I can't say enough about my love of combining the fun and versatility the AI with love of ridiculous-beautiful country and wildlife.

I'll be sure to post a complete post after the trip. Sounds like you live in nice country up there in NM.

A hui ho (until next time)
