Post subject:  2007 AI breakaway pins
Can someone clarify this issue? I have two AI 2007. Both amas are set up according to the picture below. From left to right, I have two breakaway pins and then a metal pin on the arm that locks the amas to the hull. Should a breakaway plastic pin be where the current metal pin is located? Should I put a metal pin where the second breakaway pin is located? The metal pin is too short to fit into the other two holes.

On my 2012 TI, I have a spare breakaway pin, then a metal pin, and then a breakaway pin. Should it be set up the same way?

The left pin (outside pin) in your picture is the spare, one on each side. The right plastic pin is the active shear-pin. The metal pin holds the brace end connector to the aka. The TI is slightly different.

Thanks Bob for the confirmation. I feel a lot better now knowing it is set up correctly thought it's completely different from the TI.

Well I am confused! Surely the aka brace is attached to the aka via a plastic (sacrificial) bolt (position one). Next, the aka brace end fitting is attached to the aka brace firmly by a metal bolt. Then, out along the brace, is a spare plastic bolt, there to be removed to put in position one if the original plastic bolt broke (as it is designed to do rather than have other harder to replace components damaged)

Isn't this the same on both the AI & TI?

The difference is where the shear-bolt mounts vs where the ss bolt mounts (pivot point or attaching components).

It's all to do with the brace position- forward on the AI, aft on the TI:

If you hit something on the AI the plastic bolt on the brace snaps and the brace separates from the brace connector which remains attached to the aka.
It's reversed on the TI, so the plastic bolt snaps as the aka is forced aft. The whole assembly then separates from the aka. There is a much larger gap in the TI brace connector end to allow for this.

I understand that Stringy, but isn't the metal bolt between the plastic ones on both AI and TI?

No Tony, on the AI the metal bolt attaches the brace to the aka tab just as seen in the pic at the top of this thread.

That is correct. One metal bolt, then a plastic breakaway, then a spare plastic bolt.

Sorry I am a bit slow, NOW I get it! Because the brace runs forward on the AI, the breakaway allows the aka to move backwards

No, Hobie do listen and that keeper was a Hobie improvement added after a number of us reported losing the whole brace assembly overboard after a collision.
Kayaking Bob posted a simple fix which all AI owners should do if they don't have the factory fitted tethers. Just remove the spare plastic bolt and replace it with a tether that goes through the brace spare bolt hole and around the aka. (I keep the spare bolts in my emergency hatch bucket)

The rope works fine. Just make sure the loop is long enough that you can still collapse and clip the arms together for storage and transport.
