When tying up to a dock for a few hours (on a lake) what do you guys do to prevent the amas from getting scratched and bashed against the dock? Do you use something like a boat bumper\fender?

As an alternative to the obvious addition of fenders etc, you could also consider putting out an anchor well off to the side, with just enough slack in the line to enable you to pull the craft to the dock to climb aboard, A couple of other lines to the dock would prevent it moving too far away.

I have done this a few times with 25 foot yachts, and it works.

Thanks Tony... That is a great idea!

Since the kayak is not very high off the water I was concerned that the bumper/fender flipped over the side like on a larger boat would just get pushed over the top of the ama and effectively do nothing. I could not really figure out a way to tie on the fender to prevent this… Maybe I could also try getting a really small fender… tie one end to the boat and weight to the other end? Or just try to bungee the fender around the ama?

I have the same question. There are a dozen places where I boat to stop for a drink or to eat, but the few times I've tied up my boat gets beat up. Has anyone found reliable fenders for the islands?

I run a single line through both holes and make a loop through a carabiner on each end using rolling hitches. The carabiners clip to forward and aft ama bungees. The rolling hitches allow the height of the fender to be adjusted. When not in use, it can be shortened and clipped to an aka or stowed below deck. I haven't had a problem with it flipping up on the ama.

I've tied up to a dock only a couple of times, but to protect it from rubs I've cut a piece of large diameter pool noodle to length and run a line through it so I can tie it in any position I need. A plastic washer with a knot holds the noodle in place on the rope. Than when the grand kids want to swim I just remove one knot, and the rope slides out and they have a swim toy. Not the prettiest, but so far effective for my occasional need.
