Has anyone heard anything about the prototype reacher sail that was tested during the ill-fated Everglades Challenge? Rumor had it that it was almost production ready and they were looking at a late summer or fall release.

Nobody really knows, if it ends up like the original optional jib that was promised when the boat came out in spring 2010, we are still waiting on that one.....
I saw it at the EC ( the reacher) and talked to the Hobie Engineer at length about it.
It still needed a little work at the time, but all was minor stuff having to do with the lines getting caught in the rigging and the stays.

It is a spinnaker kit... spinnakers have been ordered, so fall maybe.

Looking forward to that release, fingers crossed. Any pictures, specs, pricing?

This is Jim Czarnowski's 2015 AI at the start of the WaterTribe 2015 Everglades Challenge. The "reacher" sail is deployed.

Here Jim (PenquinMan) at the start of his 2015 EC (canceled at the end of the day--but Jim did his own EC and finished the 300 mi trip to Bay Cove in Key Largo.)

He said it was a powerful sail, and you had to be careful with it.

I can believe it. Looks to be almost the same square footage as the AI main.

They are very powerful sails, and you do need to be a little careful how and when to deploy them. The sail type is an assymetric spinnaker and it snuffs into the bag mounted on the right tramp. The sail is downwind only and is usually part of a compliment of sails. For upwind normal would be the main and jib, then on downwind normal would be to furl the jib and sometimes the main (the main tends to block air to the spin so main placement is usually difficult. The spin on my TI works ok everewhere from 90 to 270 degrees. The downside to spins is they only work up to 1=1 with the wind, you cant go faster than the wind, this is why I seldom use my spinnaker anymore.
Downwind is the worst point of sail on the TI. A Spinnaker was the first sail I added to my TI and is definately a nice addition to the boats sailing compliment.
The only downside is it does nothing about the other weakness, upwind. On my TI the very next thing I added was a jib, which presented a problem, I couldn't initially deploy both sail sets at the same time (ie...jib and spin) which resulted to be a pain. Once I added dual halyards and separate control sets for both the jib and the spin all my problems went away and I've been pretty happy with that setup and have been using now for about 5 yrs with no issues or problems. My TI is a very capable boat on all points of sail and very close in capability to similar boats like the Windrider 17 or the Weta.
Personally I'm very happy Hobie is finally starting to add optional sails to the TI, from the first time I sailed mine 5 1/2 yrs ago I was disappointed in the boats (edit: low wind) performance, since Hobie wasn't designing any of the promised options, I was forced to design and build my own, and have been extremely happy since.
Thank You Hobie, I have a pretty good feeling most TI owners will love these additions as they come.
Bob

Edit: We typically only sail in low wind conditions (3-7 mph) which are the most typical most weekends around here ten months of the year, and I have no desire to travel at 3 mph. Thats all.

Lol! The pear tree in my front yard disagrees with you. In your defense it likes to turn early.

Bob, do you think that the new Spinniker will be a manageable sail for TI folks who sail from the backseat?
