We have two great new accessories for Hobie Islands!

WIND DIRECTION VANE

Achieve the most performance and optimal course. Up on the mast head is the least disturbed wind flow, so the optimal location for a wind direction vane. As the wind changes direction or oscillates, you need to adjust heading and or sail trim for best performance. This wind vane is designed for all Hobie Islands when not using a spinnaker kit. Simply slips over the mast head and tightens in place with a thumb screw.

72020356 MAST HEAD VANE $21.99 (USA / USD 2/2016)

HOBIE ISLAND SPINNAKER / REACHER KITS
Add performance sailing when reaching or running. The Hobie Island spinnaker kit includes a snuffer launching and retrieving bag which makes handling the spinnaker as easy as can be. Simply pull on the halyard line to launch, set the sheet and off you go! To lower, ease off the halyard and pull on the retrieval line. The spinnaker drops and stows directly into the snuffer system. The kit includes a mast head wind direction vane for use while rigged for the spinnaker. Note: Spinnakers can be challenging to rig / sail and may not be for the novice sailor. Consumers are advised to rig, test on land then learn to sail the spinnaker in light winds.

Could be wrong but that reacher is a much better looking and bigger (?) than previous pictures seem to indicate. I'm impressed.

Me too. Great to finally see the release with official pictures and manual :-) Very impressed! Looking forward to the demo video cause I cant really get my head around how exactly its going to snuff and unsnuff in the wind.
Not looking forward to the price of this in Europe, its a little bit steep in the US already. Then again its a Hobie (I mean that in a good way).
Any idea when this will be available in Europe?

Woo hoo!!!! 8)
Just wondering why the price difference between the two -is this a one size spinnaker that suits both Islands or is the Tandem larger?

Yea with the TI you can charge your passengers carriage/livery fees, with the AI you can't. Hobie wants a piece of that action. I'll be installing a coin slot in my TI to help fund the spinnaker kit.

Now that's an idea Bob!
I'm going to have to charge more though, with the AUD$ at about US$0.70 it will be well over AUD$1000 by the time it arrives down under.
Bring back the days when the Aussie $ was worth US$1.10!

Still like to know the sail area, whether the TI's is larger, or is it just hardware differences that account for the price difference?

Will the masthead fitting and snuffer be available separately?

Yes, TI spinnaker is larger... longer halyard and sheets.

Likely not for some time.

Am I wrong or somebody said that this sail could be used also in a broad upwind? In the manual it is excluded. Maybe it was referred to a code zero design

I was hoping they'd get at least a little upwind performance out of it. With this sail out, I'm guessing the boat would be pretty tippy on a beam reach or heading slight upwind. It looks like a fun sail though, I can't wait to see how people will be using them. I'm sure there will eventually be mods, and maybe some upwind ability. :P

Not for beam or higher reaching... best for broad (more off the wind) and running. Too much loading on the rig the higher you point.

Yes, the belly of the sail is way too full for close reaching. Remember that the mast only has the backstay for support.
