Looks like Photobucket have changed something and the setup photos are no longer showing up.

Photobucket, formally a free service, now wants to charge users $400 per year for third party hosting. This is ridiculous as very few people will pay this amount. This is going to adversely affect this and other forums where people have used Photobucket for years to post photos on forums.

I apologize for this inconvenience to readers of this thread. I (and hundreds of thousands of others) will need to find a viable alternative for posting photos. When I do I'll repost the photos.

Not sure whats up here , but I checked another forum where I have loads of pictures hosted by photobucket for years and they're all there. I never paid them a cent for years.

Yours will soon be gone too. Photobucket has been quietly rolling this change out since late June and everyone will be affected. My images all apparently disappeared just yesterday with no prior warning.

Pictures are back! Very nice.
I guess you had to reupload everything 1 by one? No way to get the image from photobucket? In my case ,while I have the files, it would be difficult to reconstruct from scratch. Do you think theres a way to get the files off PB ,especially if my account still works?

You can try to download your entire folders. This didn't work for me, I believe they were purposely blocking it. You can try to download each photo one by one. This also didn't work for me.

So what I did was display each photo I had on their site, right click on it, and then select "Save image as...". That worked. It was a bit tedious but I retrieved all my photos this way. I then uploaded them to Imgur and replaced each image url in each post.

Pro10is,

Just wanted to say thanks for making the initial effort to post your experience with the Torqeedo and then the follow up effort to re-load all the photos. I'm intending to get a TI at the end of the year (about the only upside I can think of to turning 50!) and eventually to get a Torqeedo for it. So I went into a state of mild panic when I thought we'd lost your write-up. Nice work.

Cheers,

Dave.

If setting up the 403 independent of the rudder, would changing the rudder to the larger sailing rudder be a good idea? This is on an outback. I installed and found while the original rudder turns well to the left, its not to good to the right. Additionally I need to tweek the bracket, something is off. Waiting on some decent weather that matches some off time from work.

Hi Pro10is

Thanks for the detail in the article. It has really encouraged me to go this way rather than a petrol outboard once the time comes.

If you were going to buy a single battery without a spare, would you go with the standard 11Ah battery or the larger 18Ah battery?

Cheers

Brad

Did you look at the Torqeedo Travel shaft cover to prevent the cativation issues? I would assume it would have the same shaft as the 403 so would fit?

When you purchase the 403 it comes with the 320 Watt, 11 AH battery (smallest available) so you don't get a choice there. Your choice is whether to buy a spare or not. This, of course, depends on how much and how hard you intended to use the motor. If you're primarily sailing/pedaling the boat and using the motor only occasionally, or need to use the motor for only about 5-15 miles (speed dependent), then this battery alone will be fine.

If you intend to use the motor longer and/or faster and want a longer range, then you'll want a spare. Your choices are the 320 Watt, 11 AH battery ($524), the 533 Watt, 18 AH battery ($612), or the newest 915 Watt, 31 AH battery ($787). The 320 Watt battery will give you another 5-15 mile range, the 533 Watt will give you another 8 to 25 mile range, and the 915 Watt battery will give you another 14 to 42 mile range.

What I've found from experience is that having a motor turns you into a range junkie. When I first purchased my TI and it had no motor I was content to travel just a few miles a day. After I installed the motor I would go around 10 miles a day. When I purchased a spare battery I would travel 15-20 miles or more a day trying to reach further and further distances. So your choice on batteries will depend greatly on how far and fast you wish to go in between charges.

One final note. If you intend to use the motor in heavy or harsh conditions, i.e. offshore use, heavy wind/waves/currents, then definitely get a spare, the larger the better. These conditions require a great deal of continuous power.

I hope this answers your question.

This is very interesting. I believe that you may be the first to suggest this. I don't know if the 403's prop shaft is the same as the Travel's, but at only about $28 for the shaft cover, it would certainly be worth a try.

The cavitation only occurs at maximum speed, so it isn't a huge issue. However, both eliminating the cavitation and making the prop shaft more hydrodynamic will net you the maximum speeds possible. You can also do this with the Yakima WindJammer although your suggestion may be better. The biggest problem is preventing either from rotating out of position due to the forces applied. The 403's pylon lacks the proper mounting bracket to hold the shaft cover in place.

The cavitation on the TI is primarily due to the issue of the prop shaft not being long enough to penetrate deeper into the water. I resolved this with a simple bracket that lowers the prop (shown in prior posts on this thread). The prop only needs to go a couple of inches lower. But in the interest of making the prop shaft more hydrodynamic, I will look into this further.

Wow, thanks guys for the great discussion.

I have been eyeing the evolve for 3 years now and since i just moved back to the east coast and the ocean (Nebraska lakes...errr ponds did not work the mirage drive let alone require a motor). Now on the ocean I can justify it and a TI.

So here is my use case and i think an electric motor is the way to go. I live off the Chesapeake Bay , back river branch to be exact and if you look at it on a map its right in a spot that is not very sheltered from the Atlantic. Next i am about 3 miles from a sand bar that is the closest place to beach and let the kids play. Most of the time will be just leisurely putzing around with the kids on the tramps.

Probably can get away without one but peace of mind is worth 2k with kids.

So the real question is has anyone fit the 403 to the drive well? I think i want to have both options. I have a PA 17T that i would put it in the unused drive-well and then the TI it will be mixed use in a drive well and off a railblaza mount that will have my powerpole.
