If my ama keeps submarining for a long period of time, does that mean I have too much sail? Should I reduce the area of my sail?

Yes, if you're ama is spending a disproportionate amount on time under water it's a good sign it's time to furl. When the winds start hitting 15 knots or so I normally put a turn in. The boat will be faster without the ama submerged.

Or if you're fat like me you can use that to your advantage and hike out, allowing you to show more sail for a little longer.

I figured so. I furled in and my ama stopped submerging in.
