My 79520604 kit only had two replacement hinges. Anyone else experience this? |

Easiest method: spray WD-40 inside the Aka tube to loosen everything up _ remove 4 screws. A pair of Harbor Freight 11" long reach 45 degree offset needle nose pliers (#39537 - $3.99) allows you to reach into the Aka tube and compress the spring assembly, and the 'buttons' and then slide the entire assembly out. To install new aka spring assembly: position it just inside the aka tube and slowly slide in (using a small block of wood) until the 'buttons' snap into place. Reinstall 4 screws. |

My Dealer is dissatisfied with the Upgrade's screw-snapping and fitting problems, "..there has to be a better way..", and has advised me to wait in case Hobie gets the wrinkles out, since my AI2 is a lucky one that does not shed AMA's, yet. I agree with his expert opinion as an Engineer and lifelong Yachtsman. The kit is on the shelf for me no matter what transpires. Since I have Four Months of Chemo to get through first there is no hurry. I will not Reply to naysayers so flame away, my mind is made up. |

I too am off the water (my five spinal operations and four months in hospital have cost my health fund over $300k so far this year), but I collect parts in my (hopeful) eventual relaunch. A friend of mine with an AI2 fitted one corner with the new parts, and claimed that the force required to ENGAGE the locking mechanism was too high. I am currently thinking of keeping the upgrade in its bag to present to the next owner of my 2012 TI, and I will continue to rely on 1000# dyeema safety lines (props to kayakingBob) to prevent unexpected detachment of an aka.... |

I'm sorry to hear that Tony, I know that you are worse off than me and I admire you're determination in recent years to keep Sailing despite you're health difficulties. If only we could afford slaves to haul our 100Kg+ plus boats in to the water for us it would not be so exhausting. But I know that you are not a quitter and are already only thinking about getting that pimped AI of yours back in the water. |

Thanks mate, and I hope you too are soon well on the mend. My stuff was simply nuts and bolts..... (PS just saw the statement for my last operation, $88K not including the doctors or the road or air ambulances! So the total must be about $400K (half being for titanium parts!). Thank goodness for health funds and the Australian medical system!) |

Just finished the upgrade on my 2011 Tandem Islander. Removing the AKA knuckle lock plates can be difficult and result in broken screws, here is how I got mine out. All mine were seized, this method removed them with no sheared heads or damaged threads. First you remove the plastic lock plates with a pair of side cutters and pliers, they break off fairly easily. Next, using a heat gun, heat each screw head in turn. They need to be really hot, I measured the temp using a laser thermometer and got a max reading of 350 degrees C. Takes up to a minute with the heat gun 2 cm from the screw head to get them this hot. Now while hot, use a screwdriver to wiggle the head back and forth, shouldn't take much effort to remove them, if the screw is still tight, heat it more. My screws took on a brown tinge when they got hot enough. You won't damage the metal parts with the heat gun, it isn't hot enough for that. I applied grease to the threads when the screws went back in to help stop corrosion. Having a 6-32 UNC tap to clean the threads out helps when reinstalling the screws. |

Hi Matt, I bought 2017 AI last Nov 2017. Question is Am i eligible to get this MD180 free update. What is this update and what is the product code? I think Appottomax River Virginia only requested two updates for me. The aka lock kit and the furl kit. I already received the Aka lock kit and currently waiting for the furl kit.Can you also add this MD180 free updates if you think im eligible. Thank you Nap |
