Hello, I was told by my dealer that the AKA locking updates and the Furler line guide kit are not warranty items and I have to pay to get them for my 2015 tandem Island. Cost is $79 for the Aka locking updates and $7 for the Furler line guide kit. Please can somebody clarify if the Aka locking updates are a warranty item, or if I have to pay for them. Thanks.

They are free, per the first comment in this thread. Your dealer should not be charging you for them.

That dealer deserves a hot poker. Money-grabbing Bastard. Who gave them that price, if the items are free under Hobie's awesome warranty?

W A R N I N G to Island owners outside USA

Until now, I have been a vocal advocate (and sometimes even an apologist) for Hobie's positive support of customers, even after the warranty period. The free upgrades mentioned in this thread are a perfect example.

However, I seem to have been mistaken, assuming that the corporate free upgrade policy automatically applied to wholly-owned subsidiaries as well as Head Office and US dealers..... In addition, there seems to be a disconnect regarding the availability of these upgrades, as the delay in their availability seems excessive

Quote:
The following is the latest update and is available for all older kits at no charge
snip
1 ea 10730021 - CLAMCLEAT STBD BLACK
2 ea 8031032 - SCREW, 10-16x1" SELF-TAP S.S.

So Matt, could you please modify the heading of this thread to include the reality that the upgrades might only be free to owners in USA.

Thank you

I'm still a little confused on the V2 Mast boom update kit: 81501112 MD180 V2 BOOM-MAST-TURBO FIN KIT

I bought a new 2017 TI in May 2017. I have the V1 180 drives, is this update kit free for me?

I want to be crystal clear on this before I contact my dealer, they aren't very good about knowing these things and they are quite a drive for me.

Thanks,
Frank

Yes, they apply to all Island's.

I don't think so! Why on rarth would you want a mast upgrade kit for the superceded Miragedrive model? Are you speaking from actual experience or just speculating? He wants the real answer, not a quess...

In reading the previous threads, I can't discern if the update is free for any one who requests it or if its free only if you have a warranty claim on your drive.

Since the V1 masts and related components are now discontinued, if this update is free (even without a warranty claim) I want to get it, because it'll save some money down the road when I do need to replace something.

However, if I'd have to pay for it, I might as well just wait.

Hopefully, Matt will chime in.

I'll let Matt confirm, but my understand is any island that doesn't have the updates already applied. The 2018s already have it, but 2017 and previous. The mirage drive you are referring to is the pedals, these updates apply to the aka bar connections and a guard to stop the furling line from wrapping around below the drum. Doesn't have anything to do with the mirage drives.

And they are updates, not any part of a warranty failure. If you own an island, you can get the updates free from your dealer.

In this post, there are 3 separate updates mentioned:

79520604 AKA LOCK KIT HINGED HOOK
79512101 ISLAND FURLER LINE GUIDE KIT
81501112 MD180 V2 BOOM-MAST-TURBO FIN KIT

It's very clear the first 2 (AKA Lock Kit and Fuller Line Guide) are free updates. The 3rd one, the V2 Boom-Mast-Fin kit is the one I'm inquiring about and the one that's it's not clear. The language used around this and the fact that it's for sale for $132 makes be think it's not a free update, but I'd like clarification.

I stand corrected and apologize for that. I was thinking of the furler line guide when you mentioned mast. I agree with you, the first two updates are clear but the MD180 update isn't completely clear. I'll let someone more knowledgeable on these clarify.

Thanks for the clarification! I sent an e-mail to my dealer, hopefully this is easy now.
