I average about 30 to 40 miles round trip on some days. Here is a silly video of my solo trips out in the Gulf of Mexico on the Texas coast. 2016 Hobie adventure island, SUZUKI 2.5 HP DF2.5S2 OUTBOARD MOTOR, custom built motor mount made from pvc and 2x6 wood, haka is a aluminum ladder cut to fit. keeping it simple as possible. |

I sailed with Living Waters yesterday. Flew downwind in the intercostal waterway (17 mph winds). Thought my 54# thrust trolling motor could take home when heading back in a headwind. I tried but gave up. I hooked up to his boat and that motor of his took us both home with ease. Got to love those gas motors. |

I of course never get quite so silly, but I must agree, I never go out without my little outboard. If an unexpected thunderstorm comes up I like to get out of the way fast before it catches me. It sure provides extra peace of mind. Continue the silly enthusiasm. It puts a smile on my face. Cheers, John |

My outboard has allready saved my behind once from a summer storm. I quickly took down the mast and "wrom" was out of there in a blink. I wonder what a lightning strike would do to the PE plastic? I guess the TI would be a smoldering puddle of molten plastic.

I call that 'get the heck out of Dodge mode' with my boat and beeline for shore. When the wind kicks up so does the chop, in 3ft washing machine chop at 15mph (both motors wot in get out of dodge mode) the boat I swear is out of the water more than in, and you can literally see the hull flex about a foot in all directions. But it's saved my bacon too many times to count. Too many times I have had lighting all around me, ( scares the beejeeves out of me). Everyone thinks these adventure boats are un tippable, apparently they haven't encountered 5-6 ft vertical waves, which will flip you in a heartbeat. Your outboard is a very wise thing to have. Screw that man vs sea purist crap, I want to live to sail another day. First sign of danger and I'm outa there (lol), nobody can convince me otherwise. FE |

My 2.5 hp outboard means I can get to many places I wouldn't dare without a means to get back quickly and safely. Although I'm not wealthy and only have one, unlike FE.  Cheers, TI Brian in South Australia |

Of course I had to tolerate many "Cheating" slurs from the purists, I hope they get cancer too so they can widen their viewpoint. Like you I can now go further and not worry about wearing myself out or getting sick and not getting home. For the low cost it is cheap insurance, enjoy. |

You’ll be leaving them behind in the outboards wake! After resisting for years I now never go anywhere without the Suzuki OB on my TI. A must have IMHO! |

For anyone who sails out in potentially dangerous waters, or can find themselves in potentially dangerous weather, I feel a motor is the first mod any TI owner should install. |

You got that right. Also I have many times towed senior kayaking friends of mine that have become exhausted when going against wind and tide. |

Yea thats my issue, when things go bad I do my best but depending on the pedals to get me home, (especially us older folks) I get exhausted quickly, once exhausted I'm pretty helpless out there. Having the outboard gives me piece of mind, even if it doesn't get tilted down that day at all. FE |

It's not just an problem for those with physical issues. I'm in my early 60's but I'm an avid tennis player and can play at very highly competitive levels with twenty-somethings nonstop for hours on end. Yet against a strong headwind or currents I often can make no real headway no matter how hard or long I pedal. If I had many miles left to get back to the dock I would never make it in such conditions without my motor. This was the first boat, power or sail, I've ever owned without a motor. It was an eye opener how easily I could get in trouble. The TI is capable on its own to go many, many miles out to sea in a single day, but it's not always capable on its own to get back if the weather doesn't cooperate. This is what makes it so potentially dangerous. The addition of an electric or gas motor solves this and should carefully be considered by every TI owner. |
