Thanks guys, I am going to look into the agent route next week.
My greatest reason for insurance is theft. I am in the SF Bay Area and we have a good deal of it, although most of that is with outboard motors. I co-own it and the other doesn't want to risk 5k laying around uninsured if we leave it in the water at the dock for a night or if we are towing it and we got into a car accident.
Oh and yes a sailing vessel most definitely has right of way over a powerboat, well most of the time, exceptions are motor vessels restricted by draft, large MV in narrow channels, RAM vessels (restricted ability to maneuver) such as a working boat dredging or a big container ship in a channel (fwiw, I aced my 6 pak captains license, we went thru many scenarios about this in class). And sailboat rights go out the window when you turn the motor on.
