I purchased a2017 red tandem island demo boat last year and I have been having a few issues with the sail furling I was wondering whether they were normal or if it is something that could be fixed.

When furling the sail from full open, on the first turn, a pocket at the luff forms and essentially the sail double backs on itself. It happens a little more as the first batton fully wraps too. It's almost as if there is pocket/the sail isn't flat.

I have played with down haul tension, mast twist and batton tension and cannot get it to lay flat. I have started to get some creases in the sail at the luff which concern me in the long run.

Is this a normal thing on a TI sail? What is annoying most is that this creates a looseness to the furling and when trying to sail with a partially furled sail, it tightens on the mast and essentially opens up more.

See pics for a visual of what I am trying to describe:

Thanks for the help!

Both My AI and TI tend to do that. It's really a matter of how the furling tension comes onto the sail, which is at one point between the mast base and the sheet attachment, rather than evenly from top to bottom. I don't think you're going to find it to be an issue.

Thanks for the reply! My dealer that I bought the boat from told me something similar (that it's normal) and to keep better tension on the main as you furl. They also said that the batton may "soften" over time and more use making it not as bad.

One tip that might help.
We have had 3 TI’s and all had the same issue.
The mast is two pieces, and the joint can slip, knocking the sail out of line, ( looks just like your pic, that’s why I’m mentioning).
We re-align the masts then put tape over the joint. (Do not put screws or pins in, that causes a weakness in the carbon mast, (yep I did that and snapped a mast, (stupid stunt)).
Probably not your issue, but something to keep an eye on, that’s all.

Thanks for the tip. I did tape the joints, but I think I am off by about 10 degrees and need to make an adjustment.

Loosen up and trim the first long Batten. The loss of high tension will stop the snow coning at the top of the sail while furling.
