The wife and I are looking at buying a house/land on a lake in Tennessee somewhere. Currently the leading lake is Watts Bar because we like the proximity to Chattanooga and the mountains. We are trying to find the best lake in the area for sailing a trailer tri (Corsair 760 most likely) and the Hobies obviously.

What are people’s thoughts about the area? Can I sail year round?

We are planning a trip to Tennessee for thanksgiving break (drop kids off with the grands in Pigeon Forge).

I'll take a stab at this. I grew up in East TN on Cherokee Lake. One thing you need to know about E. TN lakes is the majority (I can't think of one that isn't) are TVA lakes. This means that most will be pulled down in the winter for flood control. When I was young that meant they started to go down in August and by October the cove behind my parents house was dry. I think they delay it now but by Nov the lakes are really low. You can sail in the winter early spring but have to be careful of stumps etc (assuming you have enough ramp to float the boat off the trailer). Hobies are fine but the Corsair might not be.

I live in Memphis now.

Thanks.

One reason we are leaning towards Watts Bar lake is we were told they don’t drop it as much as some of the other lakes. But looking it up it is a TVA lake as well so maybe not.

Watts Bar and Douglas are the two we were looking mostly due to the proximity to NC but we are open to anywhere in TN and really just want to be on a solid lake that is good for sailboats.

Searching retirement lakes in TN. Was wondering if you found one that you like? Thanks

Got nothing. Looking at some property it seems like Watts Barr is a good one. This spring we are going to travel out there to house hunt and maybe find some property.

Just my 2 cents, but Tim's Ford is SE of Nashville. Very nice and not crowded. My son has a place there. It is also a TVA lake and full pool level is lowered quite a bit in the winter months.
