Does anybody else see the serendipity between "daft" and "luddite"?

Nup, pointing out that there is difference between technical efficiency and economic efficiency doesn't make you a Luddite. Case in point: while I admire the 360 Degree Mirage Drive technology, the additional cost and complexity is not worth it in my case.

daft is a respected contributor to this forum.

Being critical of new developments just because they are of no personal benefit to you is almost the dictionary definition of luddism.

So there you have it: one man's Luddite is another man's rational consumer of technology.

so this will be the big improvement of 2020? I expected something different and more useful. Maybe thhis is good for the ones who use a kayak in narrow channels or rivers.
but the Island is not a kayak, it's mostly for sailing in the ocean.

Wow. So all of us who don't live within 1,000 miles of an ocean are using our TI "kayaks" wrong

I can't tell you how useful this new drive would have been last week. I spent the entire week with my boat beached on a sandy shoreline (on a lake, not an ocean), next to a dock, with tons of weeds for 300 feet out until I could get the sail up. And then the wind would push me against the dock, as I tried to pedal through the weeds, making no headway, and with no headway, the rudder doesn't work. Once I had to get help from a guy on the dock to push me out so I could at least use the paddle (not the pedals). A little bit of side thrust would have been fantastic.

And for approaching the ramp at my usual lake (not an ocean), the instant reverse and side thrust would be invaluable. Power boats are coming and going, getting in your way, expecting you to get out of their way. Mobility and maneuverability are key to survival at the ramp! Power boats just don't get it...

A 360 drive on a TI would almost be enough to get me to buy a new TI :D
