88991215 SET SCREW, TI MAST V BRACE
1/4-20 THRD RLD, 17-4 SS

Newer boats: 88991216 SCREW 5/16-18 X 1.25 STUD SLOTTED

Matt et all,

Just looking for clarification because it seems the initial intent is to replace this threaded stud with a larger upgraded version (1/4" to 5/16"). I have a 2008 and 2013 AI, is ordering part (88991215 SET SCREW, TI MAST V BRACE 1/4-20 THRD RLD, 17-4 SS) any improvement for me outside of just newer fabricated stainless steel? This seems it would be a like-for-like replacement. Shouldn't I order part (88991216 SCREW 5/16-18 X 1.25 STUD SLOTTED) for in increase in strength, even though it's made for newer boats?

You would have to drill the brass to the 5/16 to make the stronger one fit. I do not think the brass is a bigger diameter.

Matt,

Thank you for the follow-up. Based on the OP's first post I'm not following at all here and I think this is one of those over-thinking moments. And if I have to drill out stock brackets or turn-buckles then forget it, it's not broke so I won't try to fix it. But I'm still curious what you mean "brass" because the only "brass, maybe bronze" I can see are the turn-buckles. The OP is talking about the stainless all-thread at the very bottom. Mine looks to be 1/4-20 and I guess there were reports of that size sheering so Hobie engineering up'ed the sized to 5/16 in Here's a picture of the all thread stud I'm referring to, is this not what the OP was talking about?

Brass is embedded (molded-into) in the hull at hardware attachment points.

Yes, the original is 1/4-20 and worth replacing from time to time.

Ahh okay it's the brass "insert" at the very bottom. So you mean I would have to drill it out and tap it for 5/16 in? Whoa, if so, no thanks. I get it now, I'll just leave well enough alone. Thank you Matt.

If the brass insert molded into the hull on the older boats is sufficiently large to allow it, reboring and re-threading to the 5/16th size wouldn't be at all hard.

On the other hand, if the insert size was increased on the newer boats then the smaller insert on the older boats may not accommodate being bored to a larger size. Maybe Matt can inform us on is the size of the insert was increased or simply bored and threaded to the larger 5/16th size.

That’s a good question…“IF” the brass nut is the same size and Hobie simply re-tapped it to accept 5/16” stud. Otherwise, I don’t think it would be good to weaken one component while strengthening another in the same force chain…weakest link and all…

I know this is slightly off topic but is there a “proper” adjustment setting for the V strut turnbuckles? Or are they just hand tight followed by the lock nut?

Matt, I have a 2013 AI and want to replace the V Frame Set Screw but the part listed from you and at my dealer states it's for the tandem.
Will this also word for the AI?
88991215 SET SCREW, TI MAST V BRACE

Thanks
