I bought a used TI, and I've noticed that my akas seem to have quite a bit of movement in them compared to videos I watch online. My amas tend to follow the waves, and when I unfold the akas, the amas droop more than it seems like they should. The akas and crossbars seem fine, so I'm guessing the issue is in the connection point between the two. Is this something I can tighten up? Should I tighten it up? |

Sounds pretty normal actually. Especially when folded aft. Check the arm connections in the castings. Loose rivets? They can be glued and re riveted. |

The rivets are tight and the the piece that fits into the crossbar is securely attached to the aka itself. Likewise, the crossbar is tight. However, when I plug the aka into the crossbar, I can rotate the aka in the socket between 10-20 degrees. Is this normal? At the far end of the aka, this translates to an up and down motion of about 6-8 inches I think. Is that normal? Thanks |

It sounds normal. The aka are designed to twist within the crossbar. The original AI knuckle was just a solid pin which would elongate the aka connection holes over time. The TI and later AI’s had the newer design which has flexibility built in to prevent that. |

Okay. That's good to know. I just need to convince myself why I don't see so much movement in videos on YouTube. E.g. the Trailex video. When he folds out the amas, nothing seems to move or drop. They just slide out. Maybe it's just an illusion that I'm overthinking. |

If I was a Hobie Engineer I would have kept the original design but added a sacrificial 6061 AL T6 insert sleeve (low cost production spare part). The original design IMHO is stronger and more firm. I get the feeling a key design criteria of the new design was "ease of use"...why does everything have to end up with the preverbal "push of the button"? If you didn't know or get accustomed to "cocking" the shock cord leased pin in the original version I can see how you would complain. For me the biggest complaint of the new style connection is the loose, loud and "clankyness" of them, quite annoying if you ask me. |
