While I have my boat apart to update the AKA clips, I decided to have a close look at rest of the assembly. Good thing I did, the actual retaining “ring” is a rectangular plastic piece that is screwed on to the end of the mounting arm and secured with four screws. It was in much need of attention. Every screw had backed out several turns. Three out of the four corners had one screw that was sheared off flush. I replaced all the screws with new stainless (6-32) as most of the remaining screws were actually bent. I don’t recall having heard of this issue before, and I’m not really whining, my boat gets heavily used. Seems like a subject worthy of its own thread, and I for one, will be checking these screws for tightness at least seasonally from now on. Might be a good place for a drop of Loctite too.
