When we take the Island out with only AMA out, the AMA is always in the water which I'm guessing slows us down. We use it because we feel the hull would not be stable enough on the intercoastal in South Florida without at least one AMA.

Anyone have experience taking the Island out- just the hull in intercoastal?

Also, if we take the Island out with just one AMA should the AMA sometimes be out of the water?

Thanks,

Michele

With only one ama canoeing, it will almost always be in the water because of it's weight and will slow you down a little But is very stable. The Hull by itself is pretty stable especially if the seats are in the lowest position (2015+ models) .

Ideally, neither ama would ever touch the water because they create some drag, but of course, this rarely happens. The amas are there to provide stability when sailing. The forces applied to the sail are going to make the hull list to the port or starboard, so each respective ama counteracts that force. Otherwise, the boat could capsize because the hull alone cannot effectively always counteract it. So, at any point when sailing, one ama is usually in the water while the other is above the water.

If the sail was furled and all loads in the boat were balanced, each ama would be slightly above the waterline. If you use only one ama without the sail, it will be in the water whenever the load in the boat was heavier on that side.

Without the sail, you could remove the amas and use the boat just like an ordinary kayak but without the inherent vastly superior stability that the amas offer.

In your case, you didn't mention if you were using the sail. If you are, then you should never use just one ama because you could capsize. With only one ama, you are safe from capsizing on the side with the ama. The side without the ama is now relying primarily only on the weight of the ama on the other side to try to counteract the force of the sail. That is not going to be enough in heavy winds and you would be taking a highly significant chance of capsizing.

Always use both amas when using the sail.
