Post subject:  Load capacity of a Hobie AI?

I'm thinking of buying a Hobie AI, but a statement on the Watertribe web site regarding the AI is very bothersome. It states:
Quote:
The weight of the boat is 115 lbs. the design displacement is 350 lbs. leaving 235 lbs. for driver and gear without beginning to bury the amas in the water for additional flotation.

Is this statement true? I weigh about 200#, and that statement indicates I could only carry 35# of gear, water, and food--not very much if I want to do a weeklong camping trip in the Everglades.

If this is not true, what is the carrying capacity (driver, gear, food, water) of an AI?

Thanks for your help.

They had is wrong.

The boat weight is not included in the capacity.

So, we state 350. You weigh 200? That leaves 150 for gear.

The Adventure and the Island both have the stated capacity for 350lbs.

However, with the added flotation of the amas I would think one could push that Island capacity up a bit.

One user here had an unfortunate accident with the hull. By the time he realized it, he opened the hatch, only to find that it was filled to the top with water. He managed to sit on and pedal back to shore the hull full of water while supported only by the amas.

A few times My wife and I both were in one Island for sailing. Our combined weight was under 350 and we dit sit kinda low, but sailed just fine.

I'm sure for safety reasons and performance under 350 is the way to go, Just nice to know how much extra "float" the Island has if you need it.

Thanks Matt and Yakaholic. That makes much more sense.

I'm the guy who peddled in with the hull full of water in swirling ocean water waves. The AI will definitely hold you. Try it. You'll love it.
