Post subject:  AI Fishermen
Finally got my FF installed so I am eager to get the lines wet but was wondering how you guys sail and fish? I plan on sailing to my destination, furling it up and then start fishing but how do you guys transport your poles? I was out sailing today (got up to 9.5Mph for the first time!) and noticed the built in rod holders will not work due to the sail lines getting in the way. I was thinking of just putting bungie cords and tieing the pole down across the akas, any suggestions?

Yeah I've thought about that...but what about stowing your rod and reels into the hold via the forward hatch? Then once you've arrived at your fishing spot, go forward open out the hatch and pull out your fishing rods?
I plan on doing the above when I fish for salmon/trout in Lake Michigan...it looks like there is ample room below deck. The AI should be plenty stable to walk about the deck (thanks to the trimarian design), fish, sun bathe, whatever.

I would go with the strap mount if it's any bigger then 1.25". See below.

Thanks yakman, this is EXACTLY what I have been searching for and looks like it will solve my problem! I am mounting this bad mama-jama on it, I'll take pictures when its done, thanks again man.

Post subject:  becareful with the ram tubes
both Alhoa Dan reported and myself have found out that a big hit from a big fish will pull over the ram tube

what I am learning and what I have seen, even on a sea kayak is that I like to use bait runner reels

they have a 2 drag system - so what I have been doing is setting the bait runner drag a little loose, when the fish hits it i can hear the line and drag and I actually have a few seconds to grab the rod and reel

With a normal reel it gets pulled down - right away

I use the Shimano Baitrunner reel, you think there would still be any problems with the ram rod being pulled down? The biggest fish I would catch here is probably a 30-40lb Yellowtail but I haven't had any luck with that yet.

I have a 4500 and I am going to pick up another 3500

I lost a 3500 and rod last year - no leash

I think you should be all set not getting pulled over

another idea is go with the bigger reel and just spool it with the same size line you would spool the 3500 with

The bigger reel will get the line in quicker, less revolutions. It will also cast further

Ah I do use two 4500 baitrunner, just couldn't find a good picture of it to post;) I'll take some pics of the setup whenever my ram mount gets in, thanks again.

Recieved the item yesterday and holy smokes, the ball is WAY too small for my rod holder. What ball size is the rod holder that I have listed above? Do they make strap mounts with that ball size?

FWW I'm using Penn Lever Drags.

My favorite for all around is the Penn 330 LD level wind. I'm using 30lb test on it , soon to have a 60lb wind on leader. More then adequate for yellow tail IMHO as it handles most species here.

My 50lb rig (you don't need it for yellow tail I think) is a Penn GLD 30 . I got it specifically for large ahi and small billfish.

For smaller stuff I have the Penn Internatinal bait caster 975 15 lb test. As you never know out here what size fish will hit I had the dealer cram 300 yds of spectra with a top shot of ~100_ mono. I don't do much casting,but it makes a hell of a light line trolling reel.

You can get by using the rear rod holders, but as Al says make sure you have a safety leash. As you also noted the main sheet can knock 'em overboard.

This rig may be busted up by a big hit , but I'm trying it with light drag settings. It stay out of the way of the sheet. A rather long reach though.

I did not want stuff from Uncle Wally.

My rods were more or less what was available here in the pro shops, plus one from Charck-bait.

When I first started I put the 330 LD with a Penn International IGFA 12. A much lighter rod then the line I was using. I wanted some spring versus stiffness.

I got it in spades , but have never regretted it with big fish.

The Penn GLD 30 with 50lb is matched with a Shimano Talius standup 30-80. Its for bigger fish if I can get them. Maybe sending down live aku (skip jacks ) will do the trick, or the long effort I have messed with a "green stick".

The 15 lb Penn 975 got a Seeker 15 (20) 25.

I've thought of changing the Seeker to the Penn 330, but I like the action combo of the International with the 330. It's one tough rod.

I believe in giving the fish a fighting chance. You really don't need heavy lines, particularly with a yak, although some guys out here use 80 and up on a regular basis. It doesn't take much drag to get a fish to pull you. Once the yaks in the lever drag equation you have probably won the fight.
