That looks great SedonaAI. Don't ya love PVC pipe? It's like Mobilo for big guys. Is all of it glued, or does some of it come apart?

Hi Chris,

That one is all glued up. But does lift out and double as a storage rack for my Revo and AI which fits both just fine, including the disassembled amas. What the pic does not show is the side to side cross pieces along the bottom front and back, down in the bed. I added the 8" extensions at the top to give a little extra support across the top or just to tie down to. Should be enough across the top to haul a queen size mattress set and more. Sturdy enough to handle 65-70 MPH wind loading.

good work dude! i would consider gluing some foam to the top of the PVC, will stop any chance of distortion to the hull and will also grip the hull better during transport.

Currently, I am leaning towards padding them with outdoor carpet glued to the upper cross pieces w/spray adhesive.

Hi Keven,

I lashed the rack to a couple of tie down cleats (orange line in closeup), just to keep the rack in the bed from sliding to and fro. The actual hold down force was the kayak being rachet strapped in the front to the truck frame and bumper in the rear, squeezing the rack to the bed. I do not want to rely on the screwed in tie down cleats (the round ones) to keep the whole thing in the bed as they are only attached w/3 small sheet metal screws to the bedside. Also not shown is the bow line to the front bumper.

ETA:
This was my first attempt at a kayak stand for my Revo, main goal here was to get it off the ground; the pipe insulation used for padding quickly crushed and has not rebounded.

It could still be field mod'ed with the uprights cut and shortened, adding tee's and longitudinal supports for a light weight single yak transport rack similar to above.
Note: the 1" pipe used really shows too much flex for any sort of long distance transport.

I have a shortbed toyota 2wd pickup. I want to put a PVC rack on the back for a PA12. The 2 inch PVC looks a little bulky for the little guy. 2 inch PVC obviousl provides the stifness needed for the athwartship weight carrying pipe. Any ideas how I might stiffen some 1.5 inch pipe.to do the job? I was thinking some brand of expanding foam.

WOW- here's an old thread being resurrected.

If you do get answer, I'd like to know a few things too:

1. What color should these be painted? (Arizona huh?)
2. How long did it take for them to disintegrate?
3. What speed were you going at the time? :wink:
