I'm getting confused. Recent posts have quoted the hull weight of the AI as 80 pounds ( I thought it was 70) and the hull weight of the TI as 89 pounds (I thought it was 120).
Chris, the published weights are usually the weight of the plastic used in making the hull, without the 200 to 300 odd parts that are added during final assembly.

On my scale, my AI weighs 84 lb. (38 kg.) with seat. The TI hull weighed in at 120 lbs. (54.5 kg.) without seats. Of course, the scale could be off. Nevertheless, the difference in handling the two is like night and day. 8)

Ah, that sounds more realistic. Thanks RR.

Roadrunner,

Thanks very much. Now THAT is what I wanted to know. Why can't hobie just publish THOSE numbers? It's what one has to pick up and install into the Hullavator that is the issue. I think we all have an approximate idea of what our back's load limit is, too. :D

My AI hull always seems to weigh about 90 lbs, then I space out and leave the anchor, ditch kit and other goodies in there. Good grief.

It's not just the TI's added weight you need to worry about. Juggling that extra 2.5 ft of hull presents another set of problems that will never be apparent "on paper".

It's called the Tandem for a reason. Moving it is a 2-man job.

Lifting half a boat is easy. It get tough when you are trying to slide it into place once it's on the cradles.

If you decide to car top it I think I would put the slippery cradles up front and the sticky ones in back. Then you might have an easier time sliding it forward when you lift the back of the boat a little to take the weight off the rear cradles.

I am only new at the roof racking thing; but to put my TI onto the roof of may car is no big deal. The only thing I am going to get is another set of wheels. 1 for the back scupper holes for loading/unloading from the roof and the other set of wheels for the middle holes for transporting it along the ground (from car to water). I have found that after unloading it is a pain to roll the TI over and change the wheels.

So far from car topping the wheels have been my biggest drama (not much really). I do love my goal post and you are really only lifting 1/2 the weight of the TI as you load by doing it this way
:)

Rich and jms2756, have you checked these out yet? Maybe a good way to haul and load 2 AI's.

Say, those Malones do look good!

Okay, so it looks like I'll be posting a bit so I've come up with a witty new name for myself. Diligent-Flosser. Good, eh? It is, after all, important to take care of your teeth because they take care of you. Every time you read my username you will guilt-trip about only flossing once per fortnight. You may even decide to brush your horrible, brown scurvy-ridden teeth for once this week.

You are welcome to give non-judgemental feedback on my cool new name if you wish. I will ignore it anyway.

Now all i have to is to figure out how to change my user name while three sheets to the wind. Ha ha.

DFlosser.

So here is my solution. I will put my RS100 trailer behind my Honda Odyssey and put two Hullavators on top with a couple of unmatched AIs. This will be good. Next, I will try to figure out a way to rig an asymmetric spinnaker and snuffer bag to the AIs for a better down-hill ride.

I'm with you Diligent-Flosser.

I know all about the perils of rushed & flippant User name choices.

On the up side I only had an Oasis when I started here researching the AI.

Said 10 times fast AIGuy could see me getting unwanted attention !

Post subject:  Re: Car topping AI & TI

thanks for the continuing feedback, I picked up the TI yesterday and roof topped it on the Prado to get it home, no problem. I had moved the kayak holder to a wider setting when I put it on in preparation but I was way off, it is quite a bit wider than the AI.

We managed to get it home and unloaded, put it all together and then decided to take it for its maiden voyage on the ocean. Once again I increased the width of the kayak holder to accommodate the TI, wrong! still not wide enough. because we were wanting to get there and have a sail, pedal, paddle before the sun went down we left it as it was. I will have to invert the TI and measure the kayak holder aginst it so I know exactly the width I need.

We had no issues car topping the TI other than my bad guessing of the width. I am still researching the possibility of car topping both I will let you know if I am successful.
NOHUHU - I will check out those Malone racks, looks interesting, but may not be available here in Oz.

Looks like the handle "3sheets2thewind" is still available. Love that one.

Going, going,...
