So, my Yamaha rack broke. Long story, I'll skip.

As my amas fit into my SUV, as does the rest of my gear, and the actual kayak itself is in dry dock, four minute walk from launching area....the only problem is the sail.

Can I just tie down my sail between the two rails ontop of my SUV? If tied firmly, but the sail is not necessarily on anything except the roof, will that work?

I'd be doing 25 minutes of freeway travel.

(I am trying to avoid buying a new rack, for now)

Please share thoughts.

It should work. My sail rides on top of my TI bungeed to the the aka supports which is about the same spacing. Just be careful not to crank down on the mast too hard. Carbon fiber doesn't like compression.

I would secure it to one rail or the other - so it cannot cock to one side.

Once it does that, the windage increases greatly and it can be pulled loose.

Don't ask...... -)

My other concern would be salt water seepage into the areas where the rails are bolted to the roof.........an invatation to a rusted-thru roof.
