Sorry about the link for pics, couldn't get them included any other way.

Nice job putting that together. Looks like a good setup.

I like it!! If I ever car top again for some trip, I think I will dump my 2x4 wood heavy and still not stiff enough monster cradle and go with the ladder idea.

Thanks, should have imbedded them. The setup works great, I can load and unload alone. The dolly was a challenge, had to make it taller to avoid scraping the boat. So far it has worked great, took the boat from PA to FL and had 0 issues. The design might get refined though, the ladder and PVC are rather heavy and not sure it needs to be. May try lightening it or put more reinforcement on the ladder rack mounts.

We have an Oasis tandem we usually trailer but there are times Iā€™d rather throw it on top of our minivan, especially for one-way river trips (two vehicles needed) and when our destination has no trailer parking. The Oasis is a bit more manageable being 2ā€™ shorter than an Island and 4ā€™ shorter than the Tandem Island. Because there is stuff inside and on the hull, including a rudder-mounted Torqeedo (Evolve) and controls, I would need to transport upright like we do on our trailer. I have been looking at how to replicate my trailer PVC bunks for easy roof-rack attachment so find your post interesting.

Quattroguy, this is the best idea that I've seen for transport on a roof rack system. Can you tell us the diameter of the PVC? That looks like a 14' ladder - Please confirm. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery . . . I'm going this route!! Well done!! :D

Thanks, shared this because it works so well and transporting these has many options. I insisted the boat go camping with us, wife wanted a travel trailer instead of a class A, so this was the logical answer. The tilt to unload is awesome.
Tube is 2-3 inches, not sure of ladder length but your guess is probably close. I overdid the design, have had the opinion for years that small boats get flexed more in transport than use. Downside is this is a heavy load up high, you can really feel it. The ladder rack goes into the stake pockets, with "feet" on the rack verticals. I will be making some plates to carry some of the load on the bed rails.
Hope this helps, and hope it works out as well for you. Be prepared for some curious observers when you use it, we usually have people offering to help but with this it is a one geezer operation!

Can you post photos of loading/unloading? I'm not sure how pivot works. Thanks.

Post subject:  Re: Ladder Rack Update

Pivot is on the crossbar right behind the cab. Boat is balanced so it tilts to horizontal when the drain scuppers are in the PVC cutouts. I used a pulley on the front rung of the ladder and hook it to the boat thru the drive slot on to the front ama crossbar.
This spring when the boat is out of storage I will make a utube video of the construction details and load/unload process.
