Hey everyone,

I have a TI on order and am getting a trailer with it. When I haul my Airstream I will need to top load it on a bed rack system. I am in the process of designing this now.

My question is what is the distance from the stern to the rear cradles?

My understanding is that the cradle separation is 67"? I'm trying to get away with not having a support forward of the headache rack. If the distance interferes with the trailer I will have to think about more forward placements like a forward extending headache rack over the cab, a roof rack or some sort of vertical bar using a front hitch receiver.

Thanks in advance for the info!

-Mason

Hi Mason,
The cradles on my trailer are approx. 1650mm (65'') from the stern of boat itself.
Or allow about 1800mm (31.5'') from the end of the rudder to rear cradle.
And yes, 1700mm (67'') between cradles on mine.
I would have thought you'd be ok shifting a little either side of these measurements, it's not likely to be super critical?
Regards,
Adam.

Thanks for the info!

So with 18.5' * 12 = 222" total length of the TI and 67" + 31" = 98" would be where the front cradle sits. That leaves 124" in front of the front cradle correct? Is this unsupported weight or is there a third point where something holds up the kayak?

I couldn't understand where your maths was going wrong until I realised my conversion of 1800mm to old inches is wrong
Sorry, should have read 71'' rudder to centre of rear support.
Anyway, the 222'' is the hull-only length, so minus (65+67) = 90'' front overhang.
On my trailer there is an additional small v-shaped support for the bow just in front of the snubber.
But in my garage I only have the two supports, spaced as above on hoists.

I don't worry about missing the 3rd support in the garage, as the temperature is low & constant, and no direct heat from the sun.
Not sure what to advise for transporting, I wouldn't want to be the one who says it's ok if it then turns out not to be!
All I'd say is that most people seem to transport large tandem SOTs on 2 roof bars without too much bother?
Just don't pull down too hard on any strap from the bow, and don't park up in the hot sun?

Best to have a support block at the nose.
