Hi Brian,

I had some conflicts and could not make it. The winds should have been great, although the weather (rain) looked a bit iffy. Good for you on getting out.

Cedar Key Small Boat Meet! - May 6th - 9th!
Cedar Key is about 60 miles due west of Gainesville on the Gulf coast. This "event" is hosted by the WCTSS group (West Coast--of Florida--Trailer Sailing Squadron). It is a very informal group. Anyone is invited to join in the informal activities, even wanabees who hope to have a sail boat sometime. The only scheduled "event" is a barbeque on Saturday, May 7. The organizers (Ron Hoddinutt) ask a fee of $10 for the BBQ.

If you like to see small sail boats, this is a great opportunity. There are AIs (TIs?), beautiful sailing canoes, microcruisers, Sea Pearls, Mellonseeds, as well as larger sailing boats. Of course, you can get in some fishing if you like.

I'm staying at the Faraway Inn, Keith, and will be there the 6th and 7th.

I would also like mention a get together at Bay Cove Motel on Sunset Cove on July the 13th, 14th and 15th. Rates there are 70 bucks for standard rooms. The place in unadorned but has a place to launch, small beach and a dock. We plan to sail on the Gulf side and on the Atlantic side. I will be sharing a room with another AI owner, making the deal quite affordable and much better than camping in down here in the summer.

Ted, I plan on towing my Al to FL when I come down to visit my daughter in July. I will be in Sarasota, but would love to join you folks at Sunset Cove if you don't mind having another Al tag along. I have the number for the Bay Cove Motel to make a reservation. Sounds like a good time.

I'd guess you've been down here before, but, if you haven't, when you're not on a bridge, next to or on the water, there's nothing much to look at. But once off of the road (US1), it's a beautiful place and being on an AI/TI is just about the best way to enjoy it. Maybe someone else will want to split a room with you. You're meals will taste a lot better knowing your roommate's paying for them.

I am looking to buy a Hobie 14-16 somewhere near Orlando/Kissimmee that I plan to sail in East Lake Toho.

Any suggestions on where to buy a boat?

If I get one off craigslist what should I look for?

This is my first sail boat.

Bought my Ai early 2011. Live in south Palm Beach County and travel to Miami, the keys, or Stuart to put in. My background is sailing but I like to fish also. Just got back from 3 days in Islamorada and stayed at the Kon Tiki. Unfortunately not much wind this trip. Lot's of pedalling.

Welcome back from your sailing trip to Islamorada. Sorry to hear about the lack of wind during your stay. I suggest you don't give up. The winds are usually excellent for sailing the ocean and bay sides of the Keys.

Brand new owner of a tandem AI in Saint Petersburg Florida area.
Just did first launch today from redneck beach at Gandy. Wasn't able to sail much since the wind died, but used both mirage drives for a 2 hour round trip to Tampa.
Was lots of fun.

Camping trip to Pavilion Key, Nov 29-Dec 1-2

We are planning a 3-4 day outting to Pavilion Key in the Everglades National Park, Nov 29-Dec 1 or 2. Participants need to be on the water in Chokoloskee at 9:00-9:15 am, Nov 29, next Tuesday. I would pick up the permit.

This could be considered a "beginner level" camping trip. Pavilion is a beautiful place to camp with a mile-long, west-facing beach. It is a 10-mile sail from Chokoloskee to Pavilion. We would return late Th or Fri afternoon. Temps are predicted to be in mid-70s daytime to high 50s at night--perfect camping weather.

Only negative might be a mild headwind of 10 mph on our return.

Re-scheduled trip to Pavilion Key--new date: Dec 14 to Dec 16 or 17

It was necessary to reschedule the trip in the preceeding post. The new date is Dec 14. Again, we must be on the water in Chokoloskee at 9 am. I will pick up the permit. We will return about 4:30 pm on Dec 16 or 17. This is a beginner trip. Pavilion Key has a mile-long, beautiful, northwest-facing beach. The northern tip (the spit) of Pavilion can be found on Google Earth at 25 deg, 42 min, 30 sec N and 81 deg, 21 min, 00 sec W. We usually camp somewhere on the spit, which gets a breeze and is relatively bug-free.

I made the trip to Pavilion today. The weather was perfect. About a five and a half hour round trip. Light winds but I had the tide on my side both ways.
