Keith, where did you get your screen name?

I used to tow gliders at Kendall Gliderport, right next to Chekika State Park on the edge of the Everglades southwest of Miami.

Hi Tom,

Boy, it is hard to say where I picked up that name, but it was not from that hidden, little State Park. Years ago, there was a guide boat down at Flamingo which had the name. Also, an excellent book on the history of the Everglades, "Man in the Everglades" by Charlton Tebeau mentions Chief Chekika (sometimes spelled "Chakaika.") According to Tebeau, on August 7, 1840, Chief Chekika led a group of "Spanish Indians" and attacked the American settlement on Indian Key in the Keys (not out of Chokoloskee). At the time, Indian Key was the County Seat of Dade County--it was an important trading post between Miami and Key West. Chekika's group destroyed the settlement and killed everyone he could find. I believe a woman and a couple children survived. He had earlier made a surprise raid on a garrison on the Caloosahatchee River. The garrison was destroyed and its men killed or scattered. Lieutenant Colonel William Harney commanded the garrison and barely escaped.

After the Indian Key massacre, in Dec, 1840, Harney led 90 men from Miami on one of the first trips across the southern everglades. He had an indian guide and surprised Chekika. Chief Chekika was killed in the raid, and, later, the Harney River, which traverses the everglades, was named after the Colonel.

When I do my Flamingo to Chokoloskee trip every year, I usually fish the mouth of the Harney River and enjoy that little bit of history.

Torsten,

I've done the Stilsville run. When do sail from on Biscayne Bay?

Too bad we didn't see each other!

I'm not sure what "When do sail from on Biscayne Bay?" means? Are you up for a little trip?

That should have been "Where" do you sail from on Biscayne Bay?

If I sail on Biscayne Bay, I always go out of Matheson. Do you put in there?

Yes, we ought to do a trip.

I usually start at Hobie Beach! Did you ever made it all the way down to Boca Chica for a night camping? That's something I'm thinking of for a long time.

I've never been to Boca Chica (maybe 30 yrs ago), but it is a possibility. It seems one should leave from Biscayne Natl park or maybe Matheson to save a few miles.

Just got my AI in Sept 08 and put in at New Smyrna Beach and closer to home (Deltona) Lake Monroe (Sanford, FL). Haven't seen any other AI to date. But had lots of people asking about the craft, what is it, how much did it cost etc..

Two more (super happy) AI owners in Florida. I just can't get enough of this little boat - it is awesome! Based in Jacksonville, FL sailing in St. Johns, Nassau Sound, etc. Had a blast in Cedar Key in early February. Met Yakaholic on the water last weekend - it was great to meet you guys, maybe we'll sail together someday. Thanks to everyone on this forum for loads of very good info, certainly making buying an AI so much easier.

Darwinian- I'm over in the Fort Walton Beach/Destin area.

I may head over your way this spring if you're up for it, I haven't sailed much in the Pensacola area.

Great! Email me at [email protected] and let me know when you are coming.

I will be out of town for about two weeks in late April or early May. I am helping a friend take his sailboat up the Tenn-Tom to Decatur Alabama.
