The pull cord for retracting the rudder has stopped functioning on my 2009 AI and I wondered if anyone here has worked through something similar. The rudder-down pull works well. The rudder itself is responsive and seemingly working well. However, pulling the rudder-up control cable doesn't work. Looking at the cable through the hatch openings it seem like nothing is binding and the pull control is pulling the line properly. But the rudder doesn't retract. I thought I'd ask before trying anything else.

Thanks,

Timo

Try loosening the drum bolt. Possible that the rudder when down is locking down. There is a small "hook".

Try popping the rudder loose and then raising with the lines? There may be a small plunger jammed within the drum. This can be removed.

Where would I find the drum bolt and what does it look like?

Thanks.

There is a bolt that passes through the centre of the drum on the rudder where it pivots up and down. If that is too tight, the cable will struggle to operate the the pull up. If you try to lift the rudder by the blade, how tight is it? It may just want some lubrication on the moving parts and the bolt resetting.

Hi,

I had the same problem on my yellow 09 boat the other day.

When I got home I dismantled the twist & stow and there is a detent pin on a spring that drops into a notch in the outer housing in the down position.

The pin was folded over and the spring a little corroded - mostly salt water use.

The bent pin was dragging loops into the twist & stow lines and in the end they fouled and it stopped working.

My red 09 has the same problem but not as bad.

The detent keeps the rudder down on the kayaks apparently while allowing it to kick up if it hits something. But on the AI the loads on the rudder when sailing damage the pin.

I've just received my two new twist & stow mech's but haven't pulled them apart to have a look but there appears to be slight mods on first inspection.

Might get a chance to put them on on the weekend and have a good look.

I'm guessing if you undo the centre bolt of the twist & stow and pull the two halves apart you'll find a mashed detent pin and loops in your lines.

Dave

Remove the pin. No need to replace the whole TnS mechanism. We no longer use this plunger... didn't work properly and we went to the hold down cleats on all models.

Re-design?

If you are referring to the plunger... that is ONLY in earliest 2009 rudders. We can have a dealer snip and remove the plunger if needed. Its really simple.

If referring to the up / down line system? That is a free upgrade as noted in the FAQ / Tech posts at the top of this AI forum.

Matt, I have an early '09 Adventure with the 'spring and plunger' is this ok to remove and discard. The 2 screws to tie down the up/down cable to the rudder were never installed, cable was just knotted together to secure. Was this done at factory or dealer? Should I install new screws to secure cable and remove plunger pin? Is this a dealer warranty issue?

Yes, remove the plunger and spring. The cleat holds the rudder down.

We no longer use the screws to anchor the line ends. They allowed adjustment in the line length that is no longer needed. Also, the screws couldn't hold the loads that are placed on the lines by the pull cords, so we simply tie them together at that location now.

I wouldn't mind a photo either.

I've had trouble with mine developing different travel left to right. ie. will turn better one way than the other.

I'm wondering if the screw retained line is slipping. If there's a better way to set it up I'll change.

Dave

The photo would simply show two lines tied together... not real exciting. I'll try to get out to the factory area in the next day or two.

Steering lines are simple, adjust as shown in the rudder FAQ:

Quote:
3- Adjust the steering control lines.

Steering lines should be tight enough to keep the rudder in position, but when over-tightened they can cause friction in the system that would hinder the raising and lowering of the rudder. Adjust for minimum tension. Center the steering handle and the rudder. Adjust the lines to hold the rudder centered.

The Twist-n-Stow system requires that the rudder be held in the down position firmly. If the rudder is allowed to come up, it begins to twist and will reduce your ability to turn right. Cleat the down control line in the "V" jam cleat provided (just aft of the "T" handles retracted position).
