 As a newbie to Hobie Saling the only fault that stands out to me is the cord being used on the Rudder Controls, surely why could they not use something more robust such as flexible S/Steel which would last a lifetime, when these cords break it seems like one hellva job to replace them, while i am having a whinge one other fault (to me) is the shock cord that holds the Amas on, surely there has to be a better way of connection

Have you looked into what the cords are made of? They are very strong. You could probably hang off of them. They are similar to the cords used in kite surfing. Check it out.

Welcome John.
In 4 years of Hobie kayaking I have yet to break a rudder line. As KB says the spectra line is extremely strong. There have only been a couple of posts about breaking rudder lines. Flexible stainless steel does not last a lifetime either. The stainless rudder lines on our friends Mirage Sea Kayak (a respected Aussie manufacturer) snapped on our last outing with them.
The shockcord ama system is simple but very effective and has proved very reliable. I can't remember a post reporting a problem with the shock cord. :)

don't think their are problems with either of those hobie parts. The shock cord is great and easy to use, mine seems to stretch a little bit to much on the front of one of the amas, so when your in heavy weather it can pull down a little bit but its not a drama. I haven't heard anyone complain about the rudder lines breaking, the only problem with the rudder was weak rudder pins which has since been corrected. Now that tramps are available there are whispers of hobie changing the tiller to allow the use of a hiking pole.
