What is a reasonable expectation on ama balance?

One of my amas will not balance when picked up by the handle. That is, the center of gravity is about 2-3 inches aft of the carrying handle and the stern drags on the ground.

I don't notice anything when sailing, but it makes it a pain to carry the amas down to the water, as the unbalanced one needs to be tucked under my arm. I know roto-molded plastic will have variations, but is this "within spec"?

Assuming that you've checked it for extra water inside, or any other type of foreign material, you might be able to take it back to the dealer and file a warranty claim.

The process of forming the boats isn't always perfect. My AI has a bulge of extra material under the centre hatch. The outside is formed perfectly, but there is no structural reason for that bulge, It just looks like a little bit of extra material made it to that one spot. Maybe your ama is the same way. If it's not formed correctly, it might be a warranty issue. Perhaps it's too thin in one spot, and not just too heavy in another.

So it's worth looking into things that way to make sure things are correct. It never hurts to ask.

A number of others have the same problem.
