| Post subject: | Bent Bow - Any Suggestions? |
The hull isn't leaking and the bend doesn't affect handling. I'm afraid of making things worse by trying to repair it. Should I just leave it alone and name the boat "Owen Wilson"? Has anyone had any experience trying to fix this kind of damage? Thanks.

OUCH! Have you tried leaving it out in the sun, or poring hot water on it (maybe while trying to push it out from the inside)? I bet you stopped fast when that happened!

Thanks for the advice. I will try it and report back. "Stopped fast" is an understatement. I was fiddling with the sail when a huge gust from behind turned us into a broad reach and sent us immediately into the wall. We were almost tossed out of the boat. Both bolts on the aka braces sheared and one of the braces sank. We continued bouncing off the wall until we could get the sail furled. Definitely pilot error. Note to self: don't try sailing in tight spaces with unpredictable winds.

When you try to fix it with hot water, you should remove the bungee that's attached to the front handle, otherwise it will either deform it more or just pull the screws out. |

Hobieutah, Sorry for your problem. We've had our rudder overpowed many times, but not in tight places, tho' I've occasionally been worried when another AI/TI or sea kayak was close, & hoped the rudder would not be overpowered at the wrong time. Beautiful picture. I would guess that is on Lake Powell--where do you sail? We are out in NM, CO, UT, WY, MT from about June-October. Keith |

Yes pic was at the end of Smith Canyon on Lake Powell about an hour before the mishap. The hot water seems to do the trick. Probably can work the dent completely out with a little more time and effort, but I was in too big of a hurry and wanted to go sailing!  Thanks everyone. Now does anybody have any tricks to keep a dog from falling overboard every five minutes?

Also teach the dog to sit on the windward tramp. My little fellow has well and truly figured this out now. I just yell "tacking" and away he goes! PS - you think your dog is accidentally falling overboard every five minutes???? I think your dog probably has you right where they want you!! |
