The plastic welder works well to fix a leak, but the results are not pretty. So if you were to do this to fix a cosmetic problem, like was the start of this post, the results would not be satisfying.

Fred
IF KC is essentially a soldering iron, I have about 4 that include tips I've never used or know what the heck they do.
I am about to to something brutal to the underside of the hull of my AI that is top secret for now.
With the correct rod color and a good iron, am I correct in a real KC is not necessarily needed?

I've used the Hobie plastic welder. I've also used a soldering gun, and a torch, all work fine with the right tough. The advantage to the Hobie welder, is the plastic feeds out the center of the tip.

Take everything out of the inside of your boat and look for some left-over plastic from the manufacturing process. I once found a couple of 1" diameter left over plastic pieces inside my Hobie loose and rattling around, I saved the scrap and have used it on several occasions to heat and fill. Once I a put a screw in the wrong place and had to fill the hole. Use a mini butane torch (be careful with this one) or soldering iron, first heat the area on the boat, stick the scrap plastic to it, melt the scrap plastic in to fuse, cut off the excess, let cool and sand off for a smooth finish. If you can't find some scrap plastic off your boat cut some off your buddies! Just Kidding, It does need to be the same poly based plastic though

Your hobie dealer may have some scrap pieces laying around from hull exchanges. I cut out and saved a few pieces of mine.

Hobie used to send out welding rod at no charge. Perhaps they still do. 8)

My problem with the "Hobie" welder is that IT IS a KC Welder that is branded by Hobie. I want the color of my hull and nothing more. I have NO need for other color sticks. HELLO HOBIE!!!!
Even one of my "go to" companies no longer offers just one color, you get the pack.
My hull is Red Hibiscus so why would I want any other color? And red sticks are NOT Red Hibiscus from generic sites.
