Post subject:  AI fwd xbar/v strut plastic crack

Looking inside the hull through the fwd hatch; I have a crack in the plastic that covers the bottom of the xbar where the v-strut connects on the right side. Has anyone else had this problem? Would like to fix, but unsure how to. Any input would be greatly appreciated. My biggest concern is that if I take off the xbar to fix, when I go to reattach the v-strut underneath that I will reopen the crack or make it worse and cause more damage.

I'd be a bit concerned about a crack at the attachment point. Does it appear in the deck as well? May be material covering the molded-in insert that is thinner or un-important. Photo?

Here is a picture of inside kayak and on top

The crack is just behind the connection between the v-strut and xbar(sorry pic is upside down)

You can see a small crack forming just to the right of xbar support on top

May have been some turnbuckle overextension there - or overtightening of the top nut.

Or both.

I have never adjusted/played with any of this hardware. The AI is a 2007 hull and has been great. Only noticed this on a fluke.

The little crack in material on the insert is not of much concern. The other crack in the foot well / fire wall area can be welded. They are not connected, but may have a similar stress event cause.

No idea if you'd be comfortable doing this yourself or not, but as Matt said, it can be successfully plastic welded. Maybe your dealer has enough experience that he could do this for you. I've fixed myself in a much more critical area and to date it has held up 100%.
