One of my masts snapped off about 1/2" below where it screws into drive. I am trying to unscrew it and it seems to be spinning but the remaining mast isn't coming out.

Anyone else ever have this issue? Suggestions or ideas?
Thx

It sounds like your sprocket (the part the mast screws into) is broken. The simple solution is to replace the sprocket as well as fin mast. Hobie sells them individually.

I just broke one of my own masts. Never hit anything and it happened while pedaling in 25m of water, really really strange and concerning I must say.

The shaft broke right where it enters the brass part.

I havent a clue how i am going to get it out as i have nothing to hold onto?

Do I need to get the grey part with the brass inset as well as i wont be able to remove the broken piece of shaft?

Thanks for the help in advance

if you have any stub protruding, then you can use small pair of mole grips. Lots of soaking in wd40 or similar first. If not, if you have, or know anyone with a welder, then weld a nut on the end. Other methods involve using an eazy out. Or just buy a new sprocket.

After a shaft has been bent a few times it starts to fatigue and then will just fail under pedaling pressure.

If you bend shafts often its probably a good service procedure to replace them regularly as a precaution.

If shaft turns but doesn't come out then brass insert is spinning in housing, so new sprocket probably required

Thanks for the reply.

As I said I have never hit anything and the shaft has never been bent thats why I am so dissappointed.

Your tips are great but i dont think I can use any as the breakage is almost insode of the brass so I have nothing to grip at all. I think I have to get another sprocket as well...

Thanks again

Many, many pedal cycles I'd guess? How old is the drive? Appears to have been cracked for a long time (rust).

Thanks for chipping in Matt.

Not that many I guess, as I am using the sail most of the time ;-) A rough estimate I was maybe pedaling for 30km in total.
I do pedal kind of hard though but not crazy, never thought I was overpowering it and that 8mm steel pin surely could deal with that?
Its only 15 months old.

I think there was an impurity in the steel that has corroded into the shaft (last picture) to weaken it?

My dealer is filing a warranty claim on it

You can try with Screw Extractor.

If it's an old drive, it's not worth the effort getting that mast out imo. Just upgrage to the new glide drive, you get new sprockets with the kit.

Thanks for the tips guys.

It is indeed a new GT drive (Turbo ST). Will be getting new sprocket and mast under warranty.
So I am sorted.

Thanks again for all the help and tips
Cheers
