Post subject:  Anyway to repair the MirageDrive alignment pins
When the bungee failed to hold the drive blades against the hull, the fins dug into the sand and broke off the plastic alignment pins. This appears to render the entire drive useless.

Any suggestions on how to repair?

The design is is flawed. The alignment pins should not be solid molded, put replaceable, like the rudder pin.

The Alignment pins are removable on my Mirage Drives. Maybe it's the year (2015) or maybe it's just not obvious?

Different than mine. The alignment pins were only for making it easier to insert the drive correctly unless that has changed too...

If it were me I would drill it out and put in a stainless panhead screw and then build it up around the screw with Plast-aid. That stuff is amazing and is easy to work with and mold with your hands to match original size. It cures very strong and hard as a rock and with the screw as a base it will probably stronger than factory original.

Here is a link to it on Amazon. I cant tell you how many things I have repaired with this that would have otherwise needed to be tossed because no other epoxy or glue would have worked!

The pins only assist someone who does not understand how the drive rests in the well. Completely unnecessary to the drive function.

Pins are not necessary for function of the drive, older models dont even have them, just an aid to insertion. Drives do rock back and forth due to tolarances, but when under load will be held firmly on front drive ledge.

Matt: Your response is not completely accurate (and a bit rude). The plastic nubs below the metal locking pins are needed to prevent the pedals from rocking. Is there a known repair to replace the plastic nubs?

If the pin does not exist on earlier model Miragedrives, and the rest of the design is basically unchanged, quite clearly the "extra" pin is NOT vital, so I believe you are being unfair to Matt's response. The drive relies on four contact points, axle (2) and front and rear points which rest on the lips of the drive well.

I hacked the pins off the drives that came with my Oasis to use on my older Outfitter kayaks. Now they work fine in both and there is no extra “rocking” in either.

Correct... Not "necessary". They have no function, but to assist in drive installation. They are not meant to limit rocking. If they did absorb some load when pedaling they would snap. We have seen where drives are not fully lowered in the well and all the load goes to these pins... which would also cause them to fail.

Unfortunately, no. The reason they are now molded in the spine has to do with the structure added that created a fairing to reduce water flow up into the well. We have made some changes to the mold to beef them up a bit.

Matt: Thanks for your patience. There was a piece of debris stuck in the bottom of the hull slot that prevented the pedal drives from inserting. That was - and not the loss of the plastic nubs, as you knew - the reason for the reason for the rocking. This crow sure tastes good... not.
