Post subject:  rudder cam cleats won't engage

I have a brand new 2018 model year Adventure Island. The cleats for the rudder line are very stiff, so they won't engage. In contrast, the cam parts on the sail cleats swivel very easily. On the rudder cleats, when I pull back the line, the cleat parts don't rotate, so I can't get the line in between them to get gripped.

I can force the line into them with a screwdriver to make it work, but obviously that's not a solution, but it does prove that the cams can rotate, and engage.

I think there must be some spring tension setting that is set way way too high.

What's the solution? There are two screws on the top, but I'm afraid I'll end up making the boat leak, and not fixing the issue.

I have some videos highlighting the issue here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/oaGeYFNe6zBxqQPF6

Thanks for any tips/help!

Try backing the screws off (counter-clockwise) just 1/4 turn or so, should help.

Backing off screws doesn't help -- the screws only hold it to the kayak, and don't hold together the cleat.

After unscrewing it completely, I saw that there are metal springs. I compressed them a few times which helped a fair bit. Also, I discovered that if you pull the line all the way, the tension in the line is sufficient to get it to pop into the cam and engage it -- it won't easily engage when partly retracted -- this might be by design.

Test the cams by flexing with a screw driver... Maybe needs a bit of silicone under the cams?

They should open as you pull the line through them. Hold the line close to the hull as you pull it. Don't pull high and then try to set into the cleat.

I have a new 2020 tandem island and it has the exact same problem. I’d love to know if anyone found a solution.

I had this discussion in this forum with Hobie several months ago, with no clear resolution.
The springs in the cleats are too strong for the angle that the cord is pushed in.
My solution was to remove the spring from one cleat cam. With only half the pressure, the cords were clamped without a problem.

I got a 2020 TI. Same problem.

To help, I pull the line in an angle away from my body.
