Hi:

I've owned my AI since they first came out. Just the last couple of times out, in 14 mph winds and pretty flat seas, I've had problems with the mast collar rising up, and staying up, while I'm sailing. After looking at my manual, I have a feeling I may not have been installing my mast the right way for years. I've never used the line underneath the forward deck-mounted crossbar when removing the mast.

The wind is beautiful right now and I'd love to get back out!

Thank you.

Scott

I actually should have said the mast is moving up above the collar.

The collar should be epoxied to the mast. If it isn't, it needs to be re-epoxied to fix.

I did a poor job of explaining my dilemma. It's actually the mast that rises up from out of the collar. It gets stuck, making furling difficult if not impossible. I'm guess the problem must be with that metal keeper, but I don't know how to remedy the problem.

Hand bend it so it stays under the plastic lip on the spool (if that's the problem)

When I had this issue, it was because sand had found its way into the 3/4" hole in the bottom of the mast receiver, below the delrin balls.
This prevented the bottom pin of the old style mast from engaging securely, and the mast rose up while under power. At that point the mast snapped in half just above the mast receiver, while I was 2 miles out on Lake Huron. That Mirage Drive can be really handy...
I was able to repair it with 9" of aluminum 6061 tubing epoxied around the broken mast pieces using West flex type epoxy and 2 new rivets.
Hope this helps.

Here's the alum tube I bought from Onlinemetals.com (it shows as discontinued as of March 2023)
This fit perfectly over the base of my early AI mast:

2" Nom. Schedule 80 Aluminum Pipe 6061-T6-Extruded - Part #: 1231
Nominal: 2" Schedule: Schedule 80 Outer Diameter: 2.38" Wall: 0.22" Inner Diameter: 1.939"
Size: 9.0"
QTY: 1 @ $14.04 ea.
$14.04

Only the first year AI's had the hole in the bottom of the cup. Hobie reversed the design the 2nd year with a SS pin at the bottom of the mast-cup and the hole up into the bottom of the mast. That fixed the problem for all future Islands
