Hi group! I am a novice kayaker (still trying them out) and not a sailer (yet!) however I have been reading the Adventure Island posts and was wondering if this might help with the rudder pressure. btw the writer was not speaking about a specific kayak but sailing kayaks with amas/akas and the writer didn't state their name so I can't give credit if deserved! Heres the quote: "The small rudders on kayaks are no match for the power of the wind on a sail. You will be steering with your rudder and your paddle. Typically, place one end of your paddle against the windward side of the mast and the other astern in the water to leeward." Hopefully this is not a case of a little knowledge is a dangerous thing! gw

The only time I can remember ever using my paddle to steer was while sailing and the rudder pin broke, making my rudder useless.

Been sailing in my Island and my wife in her's since last year.
It has a oversized sailing rudder. Original rudder was unbalanced and required too much hand pressure on the tiller handle. Hobie's new balanced rudder released a few months ago is a big improvement and it sails just fine.

I think any paddle use as a rudder would be unnessary and akward except for use in some kind of emergency.
