Post subject:  Broken Seat Adjustment Buckle

The plastic buckle on my left seat strap snapped in half. I purchased a replacement buckle from a local outfitter, but then noticed that the strap is sewn to seat on both ends and I cannot get to it. Does anyone know how to fix this? I would hate to have to buy a new seat, because of a broken piece of plastic. :x

A local upholstery shop or sail loft can sew the new buckle on for you. A tailor probably won't have a machine stout enough to get through the seat.

I purchased a sewing awl at a craft store for about $5.00 including a substantial supply of thread. It lets me make customized straps and quick repairs. It take less time to just fix something myself that it does to drive to the upholstery shop. :)

Yeah that would work too.

Luckily, I have a loft in back. I get them to do my sewing.

I've had trouble with the buckle slipping while using the kayak, I end up basically laying down by the time I get to shore. I have found the seat, straps and buckles filmsy and will change to a Surf to Summit the winter.

I also had problems with the seat buckle slipping. I tied a knot in the strap once I got it where I wanted it. It would be nice to adjust it on the go but it's ok. The seat in my wifes kayak hasn't slipped. Both are 2007 models.

Hey Glenn,
Here is a post of mine about the Speedy Stitcher that you can use to repair straps, and/or to replace plasticware or hardware. Follow the link.

My seat started slipping too so I asked my wife to add velcro to the adjusting straps and now it stays where I set it.

Both of my seat back adjustment buckles slip badly. I don't know if velcro is strong enough to hold me upright... Looking for some fix other than knots.

I've replaced the nylon buckles with the same metal cam locks as on my tie down straps. The seat no longer slips but we'll see how long they last in the salt water.
