Thanks for the info and picture, Matt. The benefits of a comfortable handle and the position of the steering control are obvious. I am also enamored with the idea that this new system could reduce "creaky" steering when it gets hot. I also like the lines running inside the hull. The installation looks like it could be a bit complicated -- how much time does it take someone doing it for the first time? I can't quite figure how this mechanism will significantly change the actual handling of the boat if the rudder and the steering drum remain the same. I suppose if more rotation of the new handle is required (there certainly is more room for rotation compared to the old setup) to achieve the same amount of rudder deflection, that could improve fine control of the boat. It just seems like the old sytem, properly adusted, can do the same once you are accustomed to the proper amount of steering input. Can you confirm that the handle mounts below the level of the side rail? I'm a little worried about the vulnerability of that part when I store the boat upside down. Also, is there a line tension adjustment capability on this unit? I find that I need to make adjustments to the line tension on the old system depending on the outside temperature. It is loose when cold and tight when hot. This seems to be, in part, a function of the lines. Unless the new steering replaces the current lines, I assume line tension variability is still possible. Sorry for all the questions! Thanks, TDK |

The top of the handle is below the metal siderail. Here are the instructions for installation. It's a little involved. http://static.hobiecat.com/web_uploads/2010/11/10/84506201.pdf This does not have tension adjustments that were included in the original system due to the plastic tubes that the line traveled through. The existing lines and tubes are removed and replaced. It is now the same as all Mirage models as to the internal function. Adjustment should not be necessary due to temperature changes. |

I guess it all depends on what you like and/or expect. My 2010 PA has the old style steering - I find it extremely effectively and easy to operate even in a headwind. And I like being able to rest the heel of my hand on the corner of the seat and use the steering toggle with my fingertips. |
