Post subject:  Rear rod holder gimbal mount for downrigger?

I am hoping to add a downrigger to my PA. Advice from other forums suggests that the Scotty Laketroller may be the best way to go, and that this should be mounted as far aft as possible to minimize sideways drag. This mounts to standard Scotty bases. So I would like to use a Scotty gimbal mount inside the PA rear rod holder ( http://www.scotty.com/fishing-gear-equi ... -mount.htm ), but find that this fits only very loosely in the tube. Worse, the bottom of the PA rod holder lacks the horizontal ridge that most yaks have in the base of in-hull rod holders, and lacking that, there is nothing to keep the gimbal mount from rotating freely in the tube. I doubt that I am the first to invent this wheel - anybody figure out how to install a gimbal mount in a rear rod holder, or cutting to the chase, how to mount a downrigger there?

Off the top of my head I'm thinking you could rig a section of PVC from one side of the PA to the other via a short shaft in each molded in rod holder. Then arrange some type of fastener for the Scotty mounts on that bar. Just an idea.

Thanks for the follow-up, Tom. I considered that but want to preserve my other rod holder if possible. I was also thinking of gluing some sort of an "X"-shaped stainless cutout into the bottom of the rod holder so that it would engage the ridges in the bottom of the gimbal mount and prevent spinning. Mounting the downrigger on the rail would be another option but that would definitely cramp my mobility in the seat.

Anybody else using a downrigger? Where is it mounted?

As to the selection of a down rigger.....I have both the Scotty lake troll and Canon mini-troll.
I prefer the Canon as it has a "line depth counter" at the end of the arm.
Much easier to know the depth you are fishing at or how much cable has been deployed.
Both units can be mounted/clamped to the lower gear head post that Model #229 screws on to.....I used a 3/4" thick redwood block as a spacer when clamping on the down rigger....lastly, make sure you attach a " safety leash" to the down rigger....I made my leash from a 1/8" thick nylon line.
Tight lines!
