Do you really need a battery box?

I'm starting to rig up my PA and I wasn't planning on using a battery box. I'll be using a sealed lead acid 12v 20a/hr that I was going to mount inside that dense white cell foam that would be glued to the hull. Space is limited in the front, especially when the liner is used due to the size of this battery. I only fish fresh water so I'm not worried about corrosion.

So do I really need to use a battery box?

I really don't think you need a box given the space limitations you have set. The fact that it is a sealed unit probably would allow one to use the same setup even if you were fishing the salt.

I do not use the sealed battery box. Just the sealed lead battery. I do not use a battery when salt water fishing.

I am using 2 humminbird gell batteries. Theyare velcro to the floor under the small hatch in front of the seat. They havent moved in transport, and I can take them out for charging. Got them at ACK in Austin ,Tx. One runs my lights, and the other for my 587ci HD Di. http://s1154.photobucket.com/albums/p536/sv268/

My batteries go in and back out at every use and get a little dielectric grease on the terminals but I must confess neither kayak has had them in a box. They do get Velcro in an upright position so if I get a lot water inside the terminals don't sit in the water and short out.

Excellent Photo's! I love how you did this mod. Tell me, are the fishing lights (large green ones port and starboard) water proof? How have they stood up?

I would love some more pictures of how you rigged and wired this baby. Could you also show me some pics of how you store your battery?

i use the back hatch. just cut the gear bucket and it works perfect

I use the back hatch/gear bucket as well on both our PA's. Works fantastic!! A LOT better than using the "AA" battery method.

I have two batteries, one for gps/ff, the other to run the lights. They are velcro standing straight up under the tackle box, back away where the seat is. They haven't moved at all even when trailored. I can shoot a picture if you want. I had the manager of Austin Canoe and Kayak, here in Austin. They did a great job. Yes those lights are waterproof. They are made by Wildcat. They are L.E.Ds. The great people there at ACK did a video and sent it in somewhere and when i spoke to Justin (manager) to confirm my hull # he said that Kayak Fishing magazine might do an article on it. I am waiting to hear from them and then I will post what info I find out. Thanks all for the comments.
