Howdy folks:

Anyone have great success with mounting Scotty rod holders in #241 side/deck mount bases directly to the PA's mid ship pull bars?

I just brought my 2012 PA 14 home last week -- resolved my Saab/roof rack dilemma -- and am now rigging my boat. I've only ever used Scotty rod holders for my bigger salt water boat, so I decided to put them on my PA as well.

I came across the fantastic Yak Attack product line - http://www.yakattack.us/ - and noticed on their website a Scotty #241 side/deck mount base fastened to a PA pull bar via their GearTrac/Mighty Mount combo. Is anyone else using this set-up?

I do a lot of trolling and really like the idea of having my rods within very close reach. However, when I sit in my PA's seat and mimic the Mirage Drive pedaling motion I fear the butts of my rods will bang into my legs. I'll be using the Power Lock as well as the Bait Caster/Spinning and Fly Rod Scotty holders with everything from ultra light rods to heavy action 8' trolling rods (with longer butt sections). I know Scotty makes rod holder extenders – have these solved the above issue for anyone?

I primarily troll in salt water for big striped bass, but will also be using my PA for lighter action freshwater trolling and standup fishing.

Any suggestions for fitting my PA out properly so that Scotty and me can fish in perfect "easy to reach" harmony?

Cheers,
BF

Check this thread.
I think it has some photos but can't tell from work as photos are blocked by the firewall....

Regarding the rod butts interfering with pedaling; I have my mounts back a ways, then angle the rods forwards so the butts are back by my hips.
The other way I rig is to cross the rods over the PA, so the rod on the left rail fishes the right side of the kayak and visa versa.

Thanks SP3! Yes, the link does show photos, and they've already given me some additional ideas. I appreciate your input.

I use BeeReady holders and mount them to the side handle bars. Perfect position.

I use 2 on each side rail of the Scotty clamp on rod holders #245, had to use a 1/8" rubber shim to get it to tighten up. I tried one on each side of the Scotty #429 gear head mounts but it puts the rod out and away too far for comfortable reach, it also had too much leverage and it was actually moving the side rails. I find that an extension (#259) gets the holder up enough so the rods don't poke me and the rod butts are up away from the PA. the rods sit almost directly next to me so they in no way interfere with pedaling. They are in the way if you have to paddle in or off the shore.

I used a bike inner tube, and two full wrappings with electrical tape to get a good secure mount.

If I really try and could still twist it, so I drilled a 1/8" through the bottom of the Scotty mount and the bar and inserted a 3/4 ss screw in. No more twisting!

Ta da...

So my rods will clear, I've ordered Scotty 429, rod extenders.

I tried mounting the twist and locks without, and the rods hit the seat, rudder control....etc.

this on the water picture shows how the gear sits in relation to the seat:

Bubbleboy, just my .02 of input but I was not happy with the 429 gear head mounts, they put the rod too far out and away and they have too much leverage.....so much leverage that they were torqueing the side rails too much for my tastes. maybe if the long piece was half the length it might work better.

Got my 429's and I agree, I don't like how they torque the handles. I think I'm going to try the 429 pluged into the 444 flush mount rod holders on the mounting boards.

Hey are you guys still using the 245 mount? after reading this i purchased them and it seemed perfect until i notice my rod was getting lower and lower. The mount kept twisting and i used tape underneath. Im hoping using a piece of inner tube will work. Have you guys come up with anything else? I dont want to drill holes in my rails and i hope i didnt waster over $30 for these mounts

I have been using 4 of the Scotty #245 mounts for 5 years with no problems (pictures above in an earlier post). I did use a bicycle tube for a shim to tighten the mount and keep it from spinning.
