Post subject:  Battery question

Hey guys,
Got a quick question. I would like to utilize the storage box in my rear hatch as a battery holder as I have seen others do on this forum. Great idea by the way!!
My question is whether having the battery on its side for long periods of time poses any potential hazards. Its a sealed acid lead battery but I just wondered about this. Just feeling my way through this whole boat ownership thing and would appreciate any advice I can get. Thanks in advance for the help I know I'll recieve. :D

I've used those sealed batteries in other applications (on their side for remote control aircraft utility boxes) and have never had any issues or leakage.

I currently use that rear watertight storage bucket for my gel cell battery that powers my fishfinder. I do take the bucket out of the PA after every outing and store/charge it on a shelf versus connecting the cables while it's in the PA. I never have to remove the battery. It gets charged in the bucket with the plastic lid firmly seated. No issues so far.

Also use the rear hatch for the battery. What I've done is added a simple toggle switch with rubber boot cover to the side of the bucket. It's low enough that it does not interfere with the closing of the hatch cover. I also siliconed the wires that enter the bucket, just to try and keep any possible water from entering.

I also put a double tab on each battery terminal. The style that slides over the battery terminal and gives you 2 positions to attach loads. I use one for the connections on the kayak and the other for the charger clips.
