Just curious
whats the point of having the cool little rubber covers for the molded in rod holders on Hobie kayaks?

The first modification to my PA was to remove them, then to remove the same at the sail mast.

I find them completely useless, do some really find the idea of keeping water out of the rod holders important?

I say eliminate them and lower the price of the new Hobies by 2 or 3 bucks

To keep rain/water out when they're not being used.

Tom is right. They were designed to keep water out when not in use...BUT...They don't work...My PA stays outside, uncovered for 3 years now. It doesn't matter how well you insert them into the rod hole opening. As the PA heats up with the sunshine, the air pressure inside the rod holder tubes unseats the covers and will let water in the next time it rains. If water gets into the rod holder tubes, the pressure inside the rod holder tubes gets even greater. And...Anyone that stores their PA outside knows that when those tubes fill with water its a PIA to get it out without turning the PA on it's sides...SOooo...

My personal opinion is that they are useless and Hobie could do without the covers so that any water that collects in the tubes will evaporate faster and not become mosquito breeding areas.

Ahhhhh, Grasshopper. Point of cover not water. Point of cover to keep out female mosquito!

I was just thinking...... If you stick a pin through the rubber to make a "pinhole"; the pinhole is too small to let rain in, but if air pressure builds in the rod holder due to heat, the pressure could/would be released through the pinhole.... Thereby not allowing the rubber plug to loosen to let in rain water.
I'm no engineer, but it sounds reasonable to me... I think!

Without the rubber inserts installed, mine make a really annoying whistling sound when I get up to cruising speed.....

I took the caps off too. I used a longer screw, I believe it's a 10/32 thread. And, put these in the place for an anchor point for leashes.

I thought those were live bait wells, but I've been using them to hide my retirement savings from Obama. Fortunately I only need part of one, so I use the other for live bait. Sucks when I mess up and cast out my social security check - they never catch fish.
