I'm thinking about getting a stake out pole that I can put through one of the forward scupper holes on my PA14. I'm often fishing in 2-4 feet of water and this seems like a good way to pin the boat quickly. My concern is whether this could put stress on the scupper and cause a crack. I know people have been using this method, but has anyone found it to cause a problem? How deep can you effectively use a stake out pole through the scupper?

Thanks for any guidance!

I've used my 6 foot Wang stake out pole through my front scuppers with no issues so far. I've had it pretty far down (less than a foot sticking out of the scupper hole).

I guess the key to stress would be how rough the water or current might be to stress those scuppers, but with the re-inforcements that the 2012s and newer have, I would not think it would be an issue.

My 2 cents on scupper anchoring.......I initially tried it and QUICKLY stopped b/c once you stick you anchor through, the boat has less natural movement. For example if you stand while anchored this way there is less "give" in the boat moving it unsteady. (hard to explain sorry) I find it easier to use a trolley and anchor through it. Plus it lets you position the boat pending on the current.

I agree with jazd. Why would you want to take the chance on putting stress on the scupper holes when we know that is one of the weakest parts of the kayak?
