Hello everyone!

I am just a week or two away from purchasing one of those fantastic PA 14's. I've done so much research lately and everything points to the Hobie! I have one question for all you owners who have the papaya or dune PA.

Do either of those colors bother your eyes when the sun is really kicking it bright ?

Any advice on what you consider absolutely necessary options is welcome, as well, but they color thing is important. I want to be visible to power boats but don't want to be blinded (i rarely wear sunglasses of any kind).

Thanks!

I have the papaya and haven't found it to be a problem. Of course, I wear a good pair of polarized sun glasses on the water anyway.

Water glare will be more of a problem then the color of the yak. Good Luck

Thanks for the responses. Would consider water glare to be worse in a kayak over a bass boat, for instance? I have tried wearing good sunglasses while fishing and they usually end up in my shirt pocket. :)

Being as it is winter I would pick a copy of Jon Shein's book on kayaking a good read will help prepare. I have the dune color and like it when I asked this of my kayak dealer they suggested the lighter color for heat absorption. I personally have a fish finder with a chart plotter, didn't want to be lost stuck in a marsh being rescued by the CG. A flag, an air horn and a handheld marine radio are basics. I have had boaters come directly at me, some are curious about the yak and want a better look, but you are wondering if they see you, hence the air horn. There is so much more but you can read for yourself there are a couple of fishing websites with kayak forums, if you want PM me and I'll supply the information.

I wanted the dune but bought the papaya thinkig it would be easier to see. The papaya does fade but the hobie uv protectant and restorer brings it back to its original color.

Thanks all for the tips and advice! I still haven't decided which color to get. I love the look of the dune and the black furniture/parts... so maybe I will get it and a really big, bright flag! Oh, and one air horn as squidder mentioned.

I have the dune PA14. I haven't had a problem yet with even crazy powerboaters. I do wear a blaze orange ball cap to aid visibility, but it's probably overkill on my part.

DO wear good sunglasses - unless your eyesight isn't important to you.

This old guy has papaya. No glare problems. I fish large reservoirs where there are lots of power boats, water skiers, wave runners, etc. I use flags, bright colored PFDs, etc and still sometimes find myself preparing to abandon ship on occasions. Teens and alcohol seem to be a problem in the summer.

ALWAYS wear eye protection, not just from the sun but from flying lures, jigs, flies etc. Not unusual when a bass or trout jumps at boatside to have one launched in your face.

And how "old" do you have to be to qualify as an "Old Dog." I am 75 and fish over 100 days a year in my Hobies (have four).

Ten years ago destroyed shoulder in accident. No more compound bow, no more canoe fishing. Out of adversity, comes discovery. I became "peddle" instead of paddle. Discovered Hobies, best fishing machine ever invented! Have now owned seven, have four and waiting on delivery of my PA12. Also discovered crossbows. Much research led me to TenPoint Crossbow Technologies. Wonderful service, top-end products. Now use Carbon Elite XLT, but all good models. Have taken several elk, many deer, 12 turkeys, and over 50 wild boar. Not for this forum, use my email [email protected]
