I just picked up a 2013 PA 14 and I am installing a Lowrance Elite 7 HDI Combo but I am running into a couple of issues. The power cable is only about three feet long, which is limiting my mounting options, and I was wondering what kind of setups people have used. Where do you mount your battery and how do you keep it from getting wet? I am mounting it on the left rail using Yak Attack rail mounts w/ slide tracks and a Ram mounting bracket. Any pictures would be awesome and thanks for the help! |

I have my small battery sitting in the hull strapped right behind the sail mast plastic pole. You should be able to extend power wires as far as you need. Just use proper gauge wire and a fuse. I have an older PA so I need to drill a hole and wire cap it / seal it to get the PWR into the hull. You should have those handy dandy things on each side of yours under the side boards. I've got the 587ci HD DI Humminbird and have been having some serious power issues. I've been using a 12v 7.5aH battery like what is used for a deer feeder. They work for a couple trips and then seem to not take or hold a charge for some reason. I'm looking at going to something like a lawn mower or small motorcycle battery. Seems like it would be more than enough power, should provide more than enough amps to run several days, and can be charged with a regular marine battery charger. Right now my battery is in a roll top dry bag underneath the center gear bucket of my 2012 PA14. I would imagine once I move to a larger battery that it'll have to go elsewhere due to the size. The Humminbird power cables were super short as well. Not sure why they do that but it shouldn't be hard to extend them. |

one can extend the power cable. I extended the cable on my Lowrance unit so I can place the battery anywhere in my Pro Angler 14. Marine grade crimp connectors (heat shrink insulation on the connector) or a combination of soldering and liquid tape work wonders. |

With just the Humminbird a 7AH Lead Acid was mounted in the same space as the current 40 amp hour lithium ion.

The only ones I can find online that match that description are around $500!!!! Then they want another $150 for the battery charger!! |

I mounted my FF in the sail mast with a wedge mount. I have the transducer mounted between the sail mast and the drive hole, and I simply bungee the battery to the sail mast. It's a sealed gel cell 7aH battery I got at an RV store for $25. It's never gotten wet in there, but it is supposed to be completely waterproof so it probably wouldn't matter if it did get wet. I use a simple float charger I got at Horrible Freight for $5. Slow and easy charging is kind to batteries. |

If possible extend the wires and get the battery inside. I build a mount out of closed cell foam and glued it to the hull. There's a nylon strap which goes around the battery to hold it down. It's mounted just under the front seat, accessible through the center hatch.

It's compact, dry and secure justin, with the PA boats, this is probably the most popular battery placement, and simplest install. you can use whatever marine service wire to extend your power wire to the length needed. i recommend marine grade heat shrink butt-connectors to extend your power wire. |

For all concerned. Whatever you do be sure that no metal connections can be wetted by saltwater. They will corrode in a heartbeat with the electrical power attached. After our adventure with a hull full of water I would not put a battery in that environment. While the battery may be waterproof, salt water across the posts will make for a lot of oxygen and hydrogen being released. Trapped by the hull. One little spark then and BOOM. |
